On my recent manic visit to South Wales I found this little beauty at ST 083 886 in the University of Glamorgan grounds. The engine was made for Newbridge Colliery at Gelliwion, Newbridge (later Pontypridd) and used for pumping and winding. It was made in 1845 by the Varteg Iron Co and was moved from the mine in 1913 and is referred to as Calverts Engine by some.

I am really struggling though to get any info on the actual engine (stroke, cyl diameter etc) and how it survived. Any help would be appreciated,
thanks 🙂

Colliery sunk 1844. Engine built 1845 by Varteg Ironworks. Replacement cylinder 1861 by Brown Lennox of Newbridge Works, Pontypridd. Colliery abandoned 1897. Engine lay derelict until c1920s [photo of it in ivy-cladroofless engine house in W.G.Thomas 'Welsh Coal Mines', Cardiff: National Museum of Wales, 1976] when the surviving parts were re-erected in the grounds of what was then the South Wales School of Mines, an institution that has evolved by today into the University of Glamorgan.
