The Colliery Guardian guide to the coalfields map of 1949 show 'Wain Colliery, Ashton-in-Makefield owned by The Blackey Hurst Colliery Co. Ltd., Garswood Rd., Billinge, Wigan. The manager is mentioned as JT Isherwood (any relation to Grahami?)
Can anyone confirm the correct location of this mine as I can not see it on maps pre or post 1949. My small collection of books do not mention it nor does there seem to be any documents or even photograps on the net.

Based on your map I'll take a guess this was the associated tip and the pit was 400 yards southwest?

Some of the locations on these Colliery Guardian maps (which I have used to locate S. Wales collieries) do seem a bit dubious. can't help about this particular site.

I did wonder as to the accuracy of the Guardian maps but the fact there was little mention or photographs of a mid 20th centurary colliery got my curiosity going. I only want to acurately add it to the database.

In the 1953 edition, Blackley Hurst's address was given as "Newton Road, Billinge".
