A couple of photographs have appeared on Faceache showing graffiti that has been sprayed in several places on the Managers House at Cwmorthin.

I can't tell if they mean for visitors to go home or the disease. Unclear messaging! And why trash a cultural feature? Baffling.

I suspect two issues here;

1. Someone specifically taken against "English visitors" coming to Wales whilst we are still in lockdown.

2. Someone generally taken against tourist industry businesses (GoBelow, BounceBelow, ZipWorld etc etc that encourage visitors into Wales at any time.

Neither point justifies vandalism though.

NO excuses for that sort of vandalism at all. However, it was a big mistake imho to paint the building white. Completely out of character and just a perfect magnet for this sort of thing. It stands out like a sore thumb. Agreed, the hut needed restoring, but what it needs now is sandblasting/pressure washing back to its natural state. SLATE ! :curse:

Limewashing is a traditional way to protect walls, very common in the past. I wouldn't know if it was done here - old photos might help.

No, it was done much more recently than that either by Friends of Cwmorthin or Go Below.

It was lime rendered (not painted) back to its original state as part of a series of works to preserve the building for the future. Would you rather see it in ruins still? Look at the old buildings up there and you will patches of render still just about clinging on in a few spots. The bare slate is not necessarily how they would have looked in use as a waterproof building was better than a pretty one.

Not seen the sun for months. Now evolving to see in the dark.

No, Go Below rent it/restored it and they are closed until they get the nod to re-open from the Covid-19 Stazi!

Agreed, much more in keeping, Go Below spent a fortune on it! :thumbup:

Go Below invested lot of time. money and effort restoring the building.
As I understand it, the limewash was the original finish to the building and hence the decision to restore that finish.

Probably originally done that way as without it the building was never watertight and the walls leached water through when it rained. And it does rain quite hard up at Cwmorthin on occasion 🙂

Perhaps a few on walks have seen Go Below people about there and misinterpreted what was going on. Big shame however frustrated folks are becoming with all of this.

I know of a few legit trades getting abuse from people even though they’re working lone, local and following good practice. Perhaps a notice to explain a presence would help. Assuming of course its not really long distance jollying disguised as bit of work. That just wouldn’t be cricket.

As several others have said, authentic, and decided upon after research. The works to the building have secured it for decades to come so should be applauded.

An apology from you might be in order. The building has been restored to how it almost certainly would have originally looked - as other posts have already made clear

From experiences, resistance etc encountered in the past by Go Below, especially at the start on account of a certain Mr Miles not being 'local'..suspect the latter of the two..

Sadly, times of adversity do tend to bring out/excuse for the worst qualities of some people, including xenophobia :thumbdown:

I suppose if one really wanted to restore everything back to it's natural state you' should really stuff all the inside bits of the mountain that are now on the outside back in the hole they came from ::)

Even if the limewash wasn't there originally (which it seems it probably was from what has been said) things do move on and if it makes the place usable then it's better than it being left to gradually collapse. Well done to those looking after it!

I just hope we'll be able to go back soon, this is really getting to me now, as it seems it is to many by the grumpiness in this thread about a bit of lime :lol:
