I agree with Peter's idea, in my opinion all gates to mines should be secured with a bolt.
This keeps out kids and the unprepared and every potential mine explorer could easily carry an adjustable spanner or the said 19 mm ring spanner.
I hope your new door lasts longer than the last one and having seen gas cutting action against the Stihl I can honestly say they are equally as quick. I understand the former technique was used to cut the substantial NORPEX doors in Rampgill, where of course exhaust fumes would have been a problem.

All this talk of how wonderful cordless angle grinders are is tosh. I paid £200 for mine and its crap, Roy F saw it in action in Mid wales, the hacksaw was quicker!!. So should anyone catch cordless angle grinder man in action at Cwm, 'aquire' his grinder and pass it one to me!.

Yes it was, but the petrol driven one used by another volunteer was superb.
Later, I used a hacksaw to cut a bar out of a grill and was surprised by the ease with which this was done.
For the benefit of any stranger, my trust owns the mines, so dont get the wrong idea.

At last, the voice of sense! We should question the land owners reason for demanding a locked gate and suggest a "Derbyshire lock" to prevent casual access but allow access to those "in the know" (i.e. carry a spanner)

It works for us in The Peaks !!!.
Always remember, nature is in charge, get it wrong and it is you who suffers!.

It's a nice idea in theory but if it goes against the requirements laid down by the landowner, then it's a non-starter.

For various reasons, access to Cwmorthin is a problematic issue - the hinges being cut off the gates is someone making a point, not just trying to gain access.

Does this mean you'll be approaching Chatsworth to replace the lock on Rookery Mine with a bolt?

At risk of repeating myself again, those of us who saw the media frenzy for the closure of Smallcleugh following the fatality there, should welcome the idea for all accessible mines to be fitted with a Derbyshire lock.
If this is properly explained to the land owner, I would sincerely hope that they would go along with it.
A mixer load of concrete would seal most mines up for a very long time!

As a minimum level of protection? Can appreciate your logic but thinking of the North Riding alone, that's a lot of gates! & a lot of funding needed!

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
