An interesting little snippet of info I came across whilst looking for other mining related material. Hopefully someone will benefit from it: -

Red Soil Mine, Derbyshire - The Derbyshire Courier announces the death of three men in the Red Soil Mine, at Sheldon, through the miners, in a rival concern, burning sulphur to drive out their opponents. The Duke of Devonshire has subscribed 100 guineas for the relief of the widows and orphans of the men who were sacrificed in the dispute between the proprietors.
Bristol Mercury - Saturday 14th September 1833.

Kind regards Tin Miner

Many thanks for your reply AR. Thought someone would've known about it... I concentrate on Devon's mining history.

I did visit Magpie Mine and stayed over one night some years ago with Les, Sue and son Ben. A very interesting site although we didn't get the chance of an underground visit.

If staying at Magpie with young children this can be combined with a ghost story to make certain they remain suitably terrified for the whole stay, thus ensuring no-one gets any sleep. If you are lucky and conditions are right steam condensing from the air rising from the shaft in the morning adds credence to the story

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
