Caplecleugh - Smallcleugh through route blocked

Smallcleugh horse level is significantly blocked due to a collapsed hopper between Mitchell's flats and Cowhill Cross Vein (~200m inbye from the rise to Mitchell's) .
This means that there is no route out of Caplecleugh through Smallcleugh.
If you are in there please leave the fall alone as having a prod will just bring more debris down which will have to be moved as well.

We have got some steelwork suitable for supports but we are likely to need some 8 or 10 foot scaffolding tubes and help to ferry them in so let me know if you can help.

there's some bent steel arching sets somewhere that I have fabricated for something else could be used. creates proper cover for digging or spiling from very quickly

Not yet, doing a measuring & documenting trip on Thursday but it is currently a wall of shale rubbish blocking the level, looking just like a lot of terminal shale falls that we know and love.
The fall is still very steep, which is why it would be better if it isn't touched until we have all the steel in place

Oh agreed!! If your doing any digging let’s us know in advance..
The problem with second sun is it’s almost continuous movement.. Oldies like me can recall the eighties when having passed the tight squeeze at the junction of second sun the rest of the way was unimpeded until the fall on Cowhill... Most of the movement has been either around Carr’s I think or that section just beyond the dig at the junction... It’s a shame but I wouldn’t bet on it remaining open long term... Hope I’m wrong tho I usually am when I’m not right 😉

That doesn’t look like a hopper collapse... it looks more like stope slope come crashing down.... Do you remember you found a way up in the roof along second sun vein and it went into stope works above the level?? That will need serious reinforcement and Mr Hardy’s your man for this his engineering skills are second to non I think..
I wonder if it’s come down from even middlecleugh??

I'll see what it looks like from the other side...
what made me think it was a hopper was the reasonably straight end of the arching and the unhappy state of the one outbye.

Thanks for the offer of the steelwork, I'll report back with the painful reality and think about organising a Sherpa day.

On a mundane note, what's the best timber for underground? I can remember Warren telling me but my head has turned to jam. I do have some creosote should anyone want refreshments 🙂

Seasoned timber although most fencing timber is tanninized these days but a good dose of proper coal tar creosote adds a little spice to any would be hungry fungi :lol:
Needs it too if you have ever seen untreated timber near Barron’s ...

It was John who pointed me to this, credit where its due.
I am wondering if the stope extends inbye past the collapse and its that is its source?
Worth a look.
If its possible to get over the top of the collapse it could be worked from both sides.

You need to get some RSJs in!
