Thanks John.

Was there a couple of weeks ago and spotted the new metal fences around the ruins, as well as some odd wooden structures blocking various paths.

I wonder who the industrial archaeologist the post refers to is?

Would be a travesty to lose Dorothea.

We topo-surveyed the whole of the area, including hydrographic surveying of the pit, for a crowd of con artists called "Capital Landfill Reclamation Ltd" back in 1991.

The plan was to import waste from the big cities and dump it in there as landfill. Bloody typical.

We got paid, after producing some beautiful survey drawings and calculations. They used the info to raise investment and then they disappeared off to Spain with the $$. Or so I'm told ::)

Anyone remember that?

I note that the new company Dorothea Pumped Hydro Limited only has one director, Paul Cairns. He is also inter alia the only current director of The Dorothea Lakes Ltd which previously went by the name of Capital Landfill Restoration (Bath) Limited.

Confused?

Even if the large gates are locked there are side gates for pedestrians as they cannot close it off completely as it is a PRoW.

Hmmm. I knew I didn't dream it! So nearly 30 years later and the wheel has turned full circle in a way.

The guy I dealt with at CLR was a Max ? O'Leary ? O'Leahry ?

So does CLR / Dorothea Lakes Ltd have a lease on the land?

That is sad.....I am going down in a couple of weeks to compile footage of a number of sites before they deteriorate further and Dorothea was on my list.

I'll just have to be clever with my camera angles....although I did want to get some good shots of that lovely arch which I think will be hard now there's a fence across it.

While i'm on the subject, does anyone know if Pen Yr Orsedd is accessible or still a working site?

Wander round at will, what's the worst that can happen.

The arch is still accessible, you'll either have to squeeze under one of the wooden fences, or approach it from the main track, pass under the double arch / buttress (if you know what I mean there) and then it's accessible unfenced, as is the track past the pyramids and the engine house.

The metal fencing is largely around the buildings, and the wooden fences look like they are there to keep vehicles out.

I have been told that divers are still using it as some sort of group has been formed to regulate proceedings ?

Dont know how true it is but it has come from a friend of mine who lives over that way .

Does anybody know anything else ??

A friend of ours, Ellis has the lease on Pen Yr Orsedd now along with Ty Mawr West down the road which he has been running for the last 20-something years. He is making a go of it but mainly concentrating on crushing the tips for roadstone and pipe bedding aggregate.

Ring him up and tell him what you are doing. He'll show you around when they're not too busy.

Given the off-hand dig about the World Heritage Site Bid I could make a guess as to the IA bod, but as I might be wrong, I won't.

We have lost so much already - Penrhyn is all but buried, Oakeley ripped apart, Maenofferen slowly gutted, Votty and Diphwys mere ghosts, and now Dorothea in danger again. Gwynfor would certainly have had something to say - and do.

Following on from Graham's post above I reread the original article. I think I have an idea who the IA personage is too.

I went on to read the comments (which include updates). I am shocked at some of the things mentioned in those, especially demolishing the Plas and other buildings! :guns::thumbdown::guns:

Not Dorothea, but regarding my comment about Penrhyn, the following report outlines just how much has changed (and been lost) there since 1995. It makes sobering reading. (The historical bits are a bit shaky in places, to be polite, but that's not the point.)
