Am I right in thinking that the yellow stencils on the wall are for some measuring project as they look " official " as you go in bye on the level that goes to scaleburn and rampgill

Why would people need to spray way markers in Caplecleugh? It isn't exactly complicated.
If folk feel that they need to spray arrows, then perhaps they shouldn't be in there in the first place...

More to the point, how easy are they to remove?
I'd be keen to get them shifted.

They spray them for the same reason that they do it within sight of daylight.

Remove with a wire brush and spray a mouthful of cheap supermarket bitter lemon that reacts slightly with the limestone. I discovered this accidentally in Smallcleaugh when I had an arrow removing orgy.

People like this are in truth a blasted nuisance.

Now wouldn't it be funny if they went back to their cars and found some helpful person had sprayed forward pointing arrows on them indicating the direction they should be driven. Just so that they know and dont make the easy mistake of driving back down the M6 in reverse.

On a little dig in the FoD I found someone had put arrows on the walls with mud. I suppose it is better than paint but this mine only had one entrance and two passageways. The way out is marked by having a ladder so it's impossible to get lost, unless you habitually can't find your way out of a paper bag.

Now you're reminding me of the old Comic Strip "Mr Jolly Lives Next Door" where Rik Mayall and Ade Edmonson staggered out of a shebeen having spent the hit money on gin, and found their minivan parked facing the other way, started shouting about the steering wheel being at the wrong end again....

Cannot imagine why anyone needed any arrows in Scaleburn!
Roy helped us 'dig out' the H.L as far as we thought, to clear safely at that time.
I worked from L.LC. and V.M. Plans.
Since our group dug out the mine and we did not need any arrowed assistance, why should anyone else need any?
Well done to all who helped remove the arrows!

They put them in Scaleburn the same reason they put them in Caplecleugh....
Because they're cretins!

Paint in Caplecleugh now removed also.
If I get chance before I return to work I'll search out the remaining graffiti.
May I politely suggest anyone finding anything similar in the future just attempt to remove it themselves in the first instance?
Every arrow etc has been removed with ease. No need for a wire brush etc.

But please be careful! Over-zealous graffiti cleaning lost us some initials and dates from the 1911 discovery of the Chaldon quarry workings - just check there is nothing else there before removing the new stuff 😞

Apart from the ones in High Cills...
Although we did find one that gives us a clue, namely JS 17. So for our wholly realistic Guy Fawkes effigy we are looking for someone with the initials JS.
Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...
