Anyone done the Go Below trips?
Am sure your own trips are much more exciting but thought it would be a great introduction for the missus into welsh slate mines!
She is used to caving and some SRT but thought the trip may give her a more relaxed fun trip in slate before we venture in together down other mines.
plus she can ask someone else... Are we lost? 😮 at every junction!
In Snowdonia next week and looks like it could be fun and wet

Try his Rhiwbach trip with your wifey. Then you can do Cwm. He does do Cwm as one of his trips now but you can do that by linking up with some of the Friends of Cwm...

Also worth thinking about Corris Mine Explorers - they do a good trip.

Enjoy!

I agree, go with "Go Below" and settle "wifey" back in - then you can do all the other stuff ....

I went with Go-Below 4 years ago for my birthday with a group of friends, we had the best day out ever.

I can't recommend them highly enough.

It opened up a new chapter in my life as I still go underground exploring, I have met some great people and I have even got the kids interested in Mine-Exploring.

At the risk of going against the grain, it sounds like you've done a fair bit in Wales & Nent already. Why pay a caving tour operator when you can explore properly for yourself? Which ultimately is what its all about! 🙂

I'd agree with RJV.

I went on one of the tours last year as part of a stag-do and it was really, good but I don't think it was aimed at people who already have underground experience.

(Apologies to Miles and Marty for the potential lost business!)

I can see both points of view here... If you're wanting to get a lapsed caving/exploring significant other back into going underground then a guided tour would be a good start if they're really nervous about going solo.

However once you've got that out of the way then there's a world of - free - exploration awaiting you

Have to say, having taken cavers round quite a few of the slate mines, it's really not worth going to Go Below for it. The likes of Cwmorthin really are very easy to get round if you know what you're doing underground, and it sounds like you do. I see no point in paying someone to tell me what I already know! I think it'd be a much more memorable experience to explore somewhere properly, rather than being lead round with lots of people who've never been underground before and are over-excited by the fact it's dark etc...

I haven't worked at Go Below for over a year now Alun,

Join a local caving club ..you can do this on the web by joining ucet for example who will take you out for free for a few trips before you have to join (which your not obliged to) they have trips every Thursday night in north east Wales and are also regularly out most weekends. Www.ucet.org.uk give em a try you've nothing to lose other than £80 with go below.

Also saves buying any kit for someone who may not want to go again, which could cost a fair bit more.
I do get the impression that Go Below's customers generally have a jolly good time, so it's unlikely to be money wasted.

I have been going into Cwm for forty years now and this last two years when I have been going to do the safety inspections, Miles has been taking us though his full repertoire of abseils, traverses and zip wires and I really enjoy it.
It definitely makes a good trip into a great trip.

I agree, if you are trying to get back into the swing of things you could have a great day out. Plus, you get a ride up the track too!

Thanks for all the comments!
Am i right in guessing the Cwmorthin that we can visit and get the access codes to is the same entrance etc that they do the tours in?
Have the entrance code for next week.
If we don`t manage the toue we may go for a walk and pop in for a wander and see what she thinks to the slate mines.
Been a long time since i was up there?

Hi Andy, we are in there on Thursday evening? Probably around 1900. Go for a wander in the afternoon and keep an eye out for us later on?

That would be great,
what sort of trip do you do?
Is it fine for someone new to slate mines?
She has done caving and basic srt before but if i remember its more walking, steps, inclines and a bit of scrabbling about?
nothing too serious?
How wet do you get in there these days?
What kit will we need apart from the usual caving kit?
Will we need harnesses or cowstails?
Message me if you wish on mail and we can swap mobile no`s in case the trip is cancelled or anything?
Thanks
Andy
