I have got to say though (and this is in no way condoning this type of vandalism), that truck is a bit of an anachronism... personally, I'd be glad to see it removed altogether, not sure why it's there in the first place.

@newstuff: Penarth is out of my area! When did the mine close?

I'd believed it was something left there by a club but for what purpose, I don't know.

But yeah, I agree, vandalism is vandalism, not condoning that in any shape or form.

With the important consideration that I too know nothing about Penarth, and if it was some old club project, is it just possible that the person or group that made it have simply recovered something they want to use on another project? In which case, is there really a problem here? Anyway, maybe someone can shed some light on the true purpose of this trolley which ought to go a long way to explaining the rights and wrongs of the case.

I've no idea why the trolley was in the mine but it is/was a standard B Type Trolley of the sort are used on standard gauge rail works for moving small plant and tools. They break down into two halves for ease of handling. This one must have been cut down to fit the narrower gauge. They turn up on eBay quite often, lots of them about.
Not really a heritage item but still no reason to nick its wheels.

This may not be an original artefact but next time this pikey goes underground with his grinder he might be tempted to work on something more historical, if he hasn't already at other locations.
Vintage trolly or not he is still a metal thief and hopefully will be caught before he ruins something of far greater importance.

You want to stay well clear of golf - lots of strange blokes in funny clothes with an obsession about holes.

Whilst agreeing the most likely culprit is a railway enthusiast, it has to be said that the wheels were substantial pieces of aluminium so it is just possible that it was a metal thief.

It 'could' be a railway minded explorer but I think it is metal theft. Ali is quite valuable compared with the weight of steel in the trolley. I've used the cut-down narrow gauge versions in my work on the WHR. Those Ali wheels are quite heavy... However, it's the way the 'recovery' has been made that makes me see something else - the Cwm break-ins... Someone out there is up to mischief wielding a battery powered angle grinder. It needs reporting to Heddlu in connection with the Cwm incident(s). Whether or not they actually do anything is open to dispute from my personal recent experience - not enough personnel to do the job. Took 3 days to come to my wife's aid when she was being assaulted. Rang 999 a second time and told to **** off as 'we're too busy, ring again and we'll charge you with wasting Police time' Made (and still does) make my blood boil... I think we ALL need to keep sharp eyes open at all the places we know contain artifacts to try and catch this low life. They are definitely NOT like the rest of us who are trying to conserve our mining heritage. (Similar comments put on the ME website)

After hearing just how unconcerned they were about the Wrysgan thefts, Quite frankly, what's the point? There was far more information there than there is here as well. I come into regular contact with the police as part of my job, so I'll informally mention it, but I can't see any wanting to bother with it.

I'd rather deal with it myself should I catch someone pinching stuff.

@New Stuff - you've not wasted your breath. People do care. I have just updated the post mentioned above with the outcome of 'our' incident. We were lucky in that we had the name of the person involved after they helpfully posted a photo of themselves in the act! Doh. Reporting what you found may result in someone hearing of something and passing the info on...?

It all helps in people keeping an eye out for suspicious activity...

It's nice to see a good outcome for a change. Hopefully we see more of them in the future. Should I hear anything, I'll post on here.

In the meantime, to anyone using this, or any other, site for "shopping" with regards to industrial/railway artefacts, be warned. If I catch you, you'll be positively happy to see a copper with handcuffs. :curse:
