Just had a trip up to Penarth today to take a newbie around.

Seems some oxygen wasting pond life has decided to chop the wheels off the Trolley, and the chains holding it to the rails have been done as well. Looks like a portable grinder was used.

Be nice to take a grinder to the wheels of their car while they are in the mine

I know someone that had a trip in here not that long ago, I've asked them if it was like that then. I doubt it, can't see them not saying anything if it was.

My instinct is that this was *very* recent, as in the last few days type of recent.

I know a few chaps on here are into railways etc... is it likely these were stolen by/for someone into Rail? The only damage done was to get the wheels off, the chassis is intact. If it's of any use, from memory, they were single flanged, and I think they were cast aluminium (no rust, a little furring up from disuse), four spokes (the chains were through the spokes securing the trolley into the rails). Could you keep an ear to the ground for someone offering these around?

We will keep an eye out. That's what confused me though it's not an original typical mine wagon so I wonder why a collector would want the wheels, unless it's for their own project to use them in making something of their own

That second photo looks to me as though it was cut with a gas-axe rather than a portable grinder.

The photo is rubbish tbh. Wobbly tripod head=bad piccies. It is, quite definitely, not done by gas axe. I'm originally a welder by trade.

Circular, abraded marks, no melting of metal whatsoever.

I can't imagine what use a set of cast alli wheels (no axles), c1970s by the look, would be to anyone. You could run up a new set on the Myford in your garage for less trouble..

Wheels, Axles and bearings all gone.

Best estimates are 2-4 weeks ago. Gone on the last 2 trips I know of in there.

But as it's not original, it seems very few people give a ****, so I think I've wasted my breath on this one.

Not at all, it's very important that incidents like this are flagged up. If some people feel that they have the right to go and take what they want from mines, then they should be told that the mine exploration community finds this unacceptable.

There are some complete bellends about.

At least it wasn't an original artefact that got damaged on this occasion.

I have got to say though (and this is in no way condoning this type of vandalism), that truck is a bit of an anachronism... personally, I'd be glad to see it removed altogether, not sure why it's there in the first place.

This may not be an original artefact but next time this pikey goes underground with his grinder he might be tempted to work on something more historical, if he hasn't already at other locations.
Vintage trolly or not he is still a metal thief and hopefully will be caught before he ruins something of far greater importance.

I don't think it's plain old metal theft. The whole thing wouldn't be *that* difficult to get out with the aid of a grinder. Given the specific parts taken, with nothing else touched, I think it's got to be someone who wanted those wheels.

Someone, somewhere, wanted those wheels to roll on some rail somewhere. Should I catch anyone taking anything from a mine without an absolutely stellar reason (there are very, very few of these), I'll break every single finger on the hands of the thieving sod.

If there is actually a deterrent, maybe it'll stop or reduce these thefts. Asking them nicely sure as hell 'aint going to, and we all know just how interested the police were with the Wrysgan thefts.

I'm done being polite "because that's the way we do things", because it's obviously not working.

I was in Penarth yesterday and puzzled over why anyone would do that, having seen pictures of the trolley before.

Tend to agree it's unlikely to be a metal thief, barely worth the effort.

I don't like the look of that woodwork.
