Hello

Seem to remember walking straight up the fellside from the Wrengill quarry to the top of Kentmere Pike and it was just there. Don't recall having to search for it. Don't think there are any paths in that area.

Sorry I can't be more precise!

I think it was a wet looking adit with a (possibly) fenced off air shaft a short way back. Not much in the way of tips.

Never got to this one myself, but is it perhaps the one bottom left here ?
Nearby airshaft seems to fit.

Did you find it ? I am planning a visit to Wrengill soon and in addition to the slate quarry, I was hoping to find workings higher up Kentmere Pike as shown on the OS map. I an expecting to get quite wet (waist deep) in these. Any intel on what I should look for and prepare for would be good. It's quite a long walk in, so good to know what to need / expect.

This is worth a look if you've not seen it.

We were over there a few years ago but never got to the two on the very top of Kentmere Pike.

Jumb was obvious with the large open pit at the top gated.
There was a lower level in knee deep water that just came to a forehead.

Steel Rigg was a big open pit, it looked like there was a lower level, but without a ladder or a rope I wasn't risking it.

That may have come out just behind the buildings and be used as a water supply, if you fancied trying from that direction it seemed to be flat out it in water.

There was plenty to see on the surface around Rainsborrow Crag / Cove

A book on Lakes slate quarrying came out a couple years ago I've not seen a copy so can't comment upon it but I think I'd be after a copy were I spending any time that way now.

I hope to find it next time I go to Wrengill, it should be easier to find in the winter months(if not more flooded), and thanks for that very interesting article.

The book that I have used extensively this year is by David Glover called Quarries of Lakeland. Very well written, informative, detailed account of slate workings throughout the Park. Pictures aren't great and some surprising omissions (like Peat Field at Hodge Close), but still an excellent work that I highly recommend.

If you check the Facebook Group called Mines and Quarries of the Lakedistrict, you can see loads of details of people exploring mines and quarries in the area, including Wrengill. I post there as Mark Hatton.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
