I was looking through my grandad's collection os photos the day before yesturday.. only a few of which have actually benn re-discovered from the mess around his house. Anyway.. these were of some of the slate workings in Kentmere. The images showed Jumb quarry - a smallish quarry near Kentmere reservoir, as well as many others opposit. So.. having not been here before Allan and I set off for it. One of the 1st things we noticed was a huge, gaping cave in the side of Rainsbarrow Crag.. with a large tip cascading down the steep mountainside beneath it. The tip appeared to be covering some kind of incline. Next to this, a little further up III Bell (mountain) were some other workings, though we didn't walk up to them... one of which was clearly a collapsed chamber...
Looking at the large cave again.. we could see an enormous bolder on the floor.. dogey!
We soon arrived at the Jumb Quarry; on the opposit side of the valley. This had an adit in the bottom, though it was flooded with several feet of water.. and we hadn't planned to go in this dpeth. A little further up was anoth adit with a gate on (this was extremely interesting) I shone my torch inside.. and there were two tunnels, coming off from a tiny chamber a short way it.. it looked quite major... and obviously had something such as a shaft inside to put a gate on it. I guess.. there could be a shaft from this floor leading down to the lower, wetter one. The gate wasn't padlocked, but simply rammed in.. unless you could dig underneath there's no way of getting through.. unless of course my air shaft theory is correct.
We moved over to the opposit side of the valley to Steel Rigg quarry. This was little wore than a collapsed chamber, opened out a bit, though in one corner was a gaping hole, perhaps 10 meters deep. Perhaps it went further, though it was blocked. A tunnel was near the bottom of this, and a smaller, blocked tunnel opened onto one side.
Looking some distance over to the oppsot side of the valley, behind Jumb could be seen a different working, an extremely deep quarry, though very narrow. All of these we hope to re-visit.. this time with a camera. I'll upload my gramndad's pics soon.
