When we were here a year or two back we had a reasonably thorough look at the levels to the south of the long tunnel.

Through a mixture of sun-induced apathy and nettle stings most of the group didn't wander over to the northern side of the valley to see what was there.

The question is, should we have done and is there enough there to justify a return trip bearing in mind its a four or five hour drive? The plan on here certainly suggests that there should be though in such heavily wooded ground things can be hard to find and often obliterated entirely.

Second question, is the Slates from Abergynolwyn book worth the not inconsiderable sums being sought for it? Is it a book on the actually quarry and its working or is it more re the community like the Ratgoed book?

Cheers!

There's enough there for a hour's wander, but it would probably be better to leave it until you are next in the area.

In my opinion it's well worth having. It's a similar treatment as the Rhosydd and Cwmorthin books.

Thanks Dave, I thought you'd had a look.

I'll ask Santa for the book. Then doubtless go buy it myself.

Good book.

Suspect the mine would only be worth a trip if some daft sods had re-bolted the big shaft so one could see the intermediary level and then drop down to the bottom afterwards.

That would require some dry weather and preferably a warm day. Might make a day out next summer...

In the meantime, if you northern gents fancy a weekend away; and once we've had a week or two without rain, there's definitely scope for a trip to the place where the lead-footed RJV did his best to destroy a bit of genuine Welsh mining history - and flatten a Cumbrian for good measure 😉

Oh aye.

The book is good, too.

Worth picking up a copy, but if there&s a new one in the pipeline, might be worth waiting for that?

I visited the mine earlier this year and got to the main shaft via the level which goes off from the upper parking area. The shaft has been bolted with several stainless steel bolts.
There is another shaft which goes to surface, I assume somewhere in the fenced off area by the upper parking. I noted the shaft whilst in the low adit which has a large stream running out of it, but didn't fancy poking about in the scrub on the surface looking for it.

That's correct, it's about 20 (?) m from the parking area fence, and the shaft itself is fenced, so you are unlikely to go down it by accident.

I'm a bit ignorant about Bryneglwys, I think the name has a ring to it 😛 I can't do SRT, or rather haven't got updated stuff, so can the wagon and other artifacts be seen here without it?

This is the shaft referred to. As Dave says, fenced, and quite obvious. Unlikely to catch you out!

Yes. Go in the day level from the parking area (the mill level) and follow your nose onwards and upwards. (You can do it as a through trip to emerge in the middle of forestry - the more difficult bit is finding your way back overground down to the mill level.)
