Whilst a good idea to report them to Police, I doubt they would do anything, they never do.

No harm in trying. Metal thefts are a hot topic at present and the police do not seem to be having much success with the actual thieves hence their concentration on the scrap dealers. They may consider its worth the effort, after all he has advertised a name and contact number so half their work has been done for them. I guess his foggy thinking suggested that the 'value added' approach might yield more money than a trip to the scrap yard. Of course he can try the scrap yard later if the items do not sell!

Had a look at his other items half expecting to see the cylinder block from the incline head at Wrysgan!

I would be very tempted to report this to North Wales Police and probably First Hydro (or whatever they're currently called).

Whilst NWP can be perceived as being inactive, sometimes they can be surprisingly useful.

I got the same response, "shame to see them rot away" etc etc, so I suggested that he donate them to the Slate Museum! I doesn't justify taking them in the first place but it woud go some way towards redressing the issue? Best solution that I can think of.

Wouldn't a better solution be to return them to where he found them and in as close as possible to the condition in which he found them? I can't see the slate museum being interested either in receiving individual components out of context or in handling stolen property.

Since most museums now require donors to sign a form stating that they are the legal owner of the dontated object, this would be problematic...

I s'pose.... it was just a thought, as in his reply to me he said sarcastically "I'm not gonna lug it all the way back up the hill and dump it to leave it rust!". Ho hum.

I've had an email from eBay UK - apparently genuine though in broken English. It says that they are powerless to act and that we have to go through the Police, who will then contact eBay if they see fit (and by which time the artefacts will probably either have been sold or dumped). Has anyone been in contact with North Wales Police?

I got a similar email yesterday. I gather steveturbo also got an email from ebay saying much the same. He is going to try and contact the police although he is still in foreign lands.

As a result of learning that I have contacted NWP myself a few minutes ago.

The reason I suggested Steve do it was that he had received an email from the vendor.

I will also be contacting Hydropower or whatever their name is this month tomorrow.

Bloody amazing isn't it, I have had to contact them twice in a week over thefts. Firstly regarding the steam cylinder theft at Wrysgan (their Ffestiniog site), and now this at their Dinorwic site. :curse:

Thanks, John. Let's hope they take some prompt action.

It was quite odd actually. They emailed me back asking me for the sellers particulars including his mobile number! I had already said it was on the relevant pages! Maybe NWP firewall prevents them looking at eBay? I gave them the info and they then said "A sergeant was looking at the matter" and asked for my number in case they wanted more info. Haven't heard anything since.

Anyone fancy phoning to "cold report" the eBay pages? You might find out if they are doing anything about it, also two reports might prompt a more concentrated effort.

NWP just phoned me. They have taken more details from me. In my email to them I mentioned several items have gone missing. I said they were aware of one theft from Blaenau from August 2010. They wanted more details of this too. I was able to bring Wrysgan into the conversation too.

I made it clear that, to my mind at least, whilst the two thefts from Blaenau could be linked (both took some organising and manpower) I doubted they linked to the Dinorwic items on eBay.

Thanks JohnnearCfon, something's come up that demands my attention so am likely to be out of the loop for a couple of weeks.

Guys I hate to be negative but as soon a\s you put the Dinorwic site on the scope of the owners and the police you are asking for very large steel grey fences etc etc and trespass intolerence.... pee's me off every bit as much as you guys but the site is not conserved or even listed I believe, and the guy can just deny it all anyway or say he was given the stuff.... my worry is that every time we involve the cops and the site owners it makes them more determined to keep everyone off or even just demolish, blow the lot up as its causing them agro... just a thought!
Lots of folk seem to have something out of Dinorwic... or is it just the fact he is selling it!

I have to correct you on some of your post. Parts of the site are listed (not entirely sure what though). Also, some of the site is conserved, mainly the A1 to A4 inclines and surrounding areas though.
