In a wooded valley of Afon Galedffrwd above Coed Parc there is an ochre mine ( 61086592). The Cassini map of 1840 - 41 mentions an ochre mill which is probably the present house. I think it should be recorded in the database and if anyone has any pictures or information I would be very grateful for them to be shared with forum members.

Does the map give it a name? Otherwise it would be difficult to enter it.

Had a look on Hendrecoed (wilkinson's database) and all it shows is this :
YR OCAR QUARRY LLANDEGAI CAERNARFONSHIRE SH611659

I know of the site. It's on my list of things to do
I'm informed that the adit is well and truly collapsed, it goes under the road that runs up to Hirdir. The road was closed for some time earlier this year because of subsidence.
The house was owned by Dr.Hughes (?) and purchased by the Life Foundation after his death.

How can I get a 6 inch - I mile scale map of the area? I'm really desperate to get maps of this scale.

The house and grounds are, at present, occupied by holidaying Hasidic Jews, which made any approach or conversation, let alone a look around the property, of Yr Ocar, impossible.
Sorry.
Outside the property there are many signs of diggings into the valley side but really little or nothing of any great import could be seen. If you didn't know it, seems unlikely that you'd guess it! Much of the area is deep in thick bracken which made walking around difficult and potentially dangerous as it hides many of the drops and falls on this steep slope. Very wet and slimy in places.
Classic signs of ochre however, slightly to the SE of Hirdir.
I take it that it is total coincidence that Bradites paint factory is only a stone's throw away!

Thanks for trying and what an interesting connection to Bradite! Is this a significant lead? All is not lost.

10 year thread revival but I have something useful to add to the thread. I grew up in Hirdir Ganol and as a kid would play in the woods mentioned above. A short section of tunnel is accessible not sure if it was an adit or trial but it provided a lot of entertainment. Interesting to hear about the road being closed due to subsidence that would have been right outside the house and must have predated our living there.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
