Lovely pic!

Did we ever find out whether this crane was going to be put back once the roadworks have been completed?

It would be a shame for such a prominent landmark to be lost: beside the monstrous tips, this was a very human-sized memorial to the slate industry of Blaenau Ffestiniog and it was just about the first thing you saw as you drove into the town.

No news on whether it is going to be put back I'm afraid but IIRC DylanW said it was safe in the mill?

DylanW, get off the beach and tell us where the crane is πŸ™‚ πŸ™‚

The council officer in Dolgellau told me (when I queried it's removal) it was going to be reinstated after the roadworks were complete, albeit at a slightly different position.

Cheers John!

This was presumably used for trans-shipment for slate from Llechwedd - was this to the Ffestiniog or to the national rail system?

It transfered goods to/from standard gauge wagons. I doubt it was used for transhipping slate though - they didn't use pallets in those days.

I don't think I'm mistaken for thinking that this is now back in place, although the weather was so foul yesterday I didn't stop for a closer look and a photo.

Thank you, Greaves, for putting it back!

I heard (or read somewhere) that Llechwedd have plans to recreate ,on a slightly different alignment, the original wharf and standard gauge sidings. Do you have any details DylanW?

Managed an awayday yesterday, called in to the wharf on my way to Nantlle for a mooch around. Lots of changes at the wharf now, including a big new galvanized steel fence with 10' high gates leading onto the wharf. Security wasn't an issue as the gates were not locked.....

Anyway, I have uploaded some photos to the Llechwedd album, plus for comparison, I have uploaded photos to the Llechwedd archive album taken a few years ago. Not quite the same atmosphere now, but at least it wasn't bulldozed into oblivion.

Thanks for those!

This one seems to suggest that something is afoot:

At the risk of not adding anything particularly productive to this thread, it's good to see it back!
