You can get some pretty good satelite images on 'Windows live search' when the weather is favourable. Llechwedd was very clear last week. Perhaps with the right software one could zoom down and perhaps see a wagon or two.
I am told there is another website with satelite images which is better. Does anyone know what it is by any chance? 😉

The Windows Live sta pics can't be that up to date, they dont show any of the roadworks past the entrance to Llechwedd.

Sorry John, just testing your responses. I don't know how often they update the images as I had a look around this evening and I noticed that Dwr Oer lake next to Manod lake was nearly dry, so must have been possibly last year sometime perhaps in the dry spell when the image was recorded.

I was looking at it last night, and to what I can see, the sat pics are about 4-5yrs old, of what i can see by judging the untopping work on floor 6/7 Llechwedd

It has always puzzled me why one does not have to pay for using windows live. Now I know the answer. It's like the weather forcast on tv, late and not accurate. 🙂

That sounds about right to me, although I think some are a bit older. If I zoom in on my house it is being built, which dates the photos of that areas to summer 2000!

Who is G Williams? And does he mind being discussed here? Is there a suggestion that he's already here and reading this?

I have no issue with people using usernames, but I'm keen that this forum remains polite, useful and doesn't single out individuals for attack who are unaware or unable to put forward their defence/argument on here.

My "spy in the sky" (who is a bit more up to date than Windows Live" has just, by coincidence, told me of movements and machinery on Floor 5. Also they are now dumping waste slate on that level. I suppose if you can't demolish it bury it instead?

These forums make for hilarious redaing...

The Llechwedd employees on here such as DylanW and Master_Blaster are not setting a very good image of the company they are from. The way they are acting on here portrays a poor image of Greaves Welsh Slate, and from what I have heard some of these views are reflected throughout the company- prehaps this is the reason Greaves are not doing so well at the moment?

It seems a shame to think that an industry which once employed hundreds of people, and was worth a huge amount of money, is now in the hands of a select few who do not seem to be going about their work in the best way of keeping the industry (now a mere shadow of its former self) in existance.

It would seem that some people on this forum are not interested in exploring mines, or industrial archeology. Rather they would argue about which of their fellow or former employees had done what within the company which they work for. This is not only boring, but irrelevant to these forums.

I think it is bad advertising for Greaves that their workers havn't got much better things to do than b*tch about one another on internet forums, something usually done by 11 year old girls, trying to provoke reactions. Having seen the way Llechwedd workers treat their workmates I can ensure you I will never seek employment there, and pity anyone who does. Why not work together, for the better of the company?

Either that, or please SimonRL can we have a seperate forum for disgruntled Greaves workers to taunt and moan about each other??

Well said...

Let that be an end please to bickering between current, or past, Greaves employees. Although in fairness if there are the quoted number of Llechwedd employees registered here then those causing the problem are in the minority and a number of others make a valued contribution.

For the record, although this has already been stated clearly, everybody on here wants to see the Welsh slate industry (what is left of it) continue and prosper. But we also want to see our heritage preserved. We are interested in what goes on at Llechwedd, but we're not interested in petty online squabbling.

Now let's bet back to mining, mine exploration, preservation, IA, and SRT/photography related discussions please 🙂

Just for the record, I do not, nor have I ever, (nor will I ever) work for Greaves and Co! Lest anyone on here think otherwise.

I am an ex employee of Llechwedd. But have left the company 27 years ago. I must say that it was the best crowd I have ever worked with, having a sense of humour and a character I have not seen since. I think it is very important to carry on working the quarry and is important for local employment. But as said, certain employees past or present should not bicker with one another on this forum. But should try to put over a better image than has been shown to others of present attitudes and of doings at the quarry. I am pretty certain that R.H.D. nor A.R. would not approve of the way things have been put over on their behalf. I am certain that past management and employees would and are not impressed by it.
So as Simon says, lets all get talking mines, quarries and exploration and look into the future with optimism. Have a pint, sleep well 😉 . But don't get up late for work.

I' m afraid to notify you that your "eye in the sky" is incorrect, what i suspect he has seen is a digger nearer floor 7 siffting through the tip to get sawn ends etc for walling on the A470 sceem.

There are no machines of ours on floor 5. The buildings have been placed under a temp.preservation order, pending further enquiery. We are complying with it, regardles of what we may think about it.

Please get you facts right first. 😉

Can I just interject into this argument to say that's a very worthwhile thing to be doing: it gives me back a bit of faith in Greaves to think that you're re-using offcuts for something useful that will be seen by hundreds of people each day. 🙂

Now don't spoil if for me by suggesting that you demolished to winding house so you could use its blocks for the same purpose... :sneaky:
