So, DylanW, exactly how would/could anyone make a profit out of the winder that was destroyed

Scrap prices could rise again maybe!

Somehow I can't see Llanberis selling it (or anything else) for scrap.

Basically you are talking carp as usual.

Llanberis is a very succesful operation.
It has nothing like the historical assets Llechwedd (or Greaves in general) has, everything is/was on site and there for all to see.
Inclines, all the equipment, even power houses.
Not to mention an industrial landscape that Dinorwic/Llanberis doesn't come close to.
Despite efforts a lot of this stuff still exists, management seems convinced that the best use of these assets is to weigh them in for a few quid and a backhander.
Properly managed the tourist operation could be massively lucrative, throwing unique pieces of equipment to the scrap man and smashing the Robey incline is a **** poor use of the assets Greaves have.
If a certain man cannot see that then perhaps he ought to be replaced by somebody who has an idea about where the future lies rather than both feet planted firmly in the past.
Once all these things are gone its to late, aah well it gets a few quid in on the quiet doesn't it?

anyway, none of the "junk" has been scraped from quarry tours, just moved, they where moved for good reasons.

Backhanders!? I' m not in on this!!

And of course Llanberis is a succesfull operation! It s bank-rolled by the Cynulliad in Caerdydd! very dificult for it not to be succesfull i would think!

What's that the, waiting until you have got enough together to make it "worthwhile"? I am sure it wouldn't take you very long to find loads more stuff to scrap.

Nah, you don't have to scrap anything there, you are letting that rot anyway, so it wouldn' fetch much for scrap anyway now!

Ah that would be a malicious accusation on my part without any justification, sue me :bored:
Given Llanberis' success maybe you can see what some of are getting at about Llechwedd being able to rival theat success?

Will it be overseas competition, marketing problems, lack of raw material, Or plain appalling management that kills off the modern North Wales slate industry for good? I have my theories... :sneaky:

Oh and forget Greaves, I'm off to order 300 tons of best Welsh slate from the Welsh slate museum!

At least that might stop wanton destruction of slate heritage, although doubtless Greaves would sell every last ounce of scrap first! :guns: :guns: :guns: :curse:

So, if I understand you correctly, you would rather see the quarries closed, and jobs lost, in order to preserve some buildings + artifacts etc. Verry interesting.

iT'S A GOOD QUESTION!
The point is... we don't want Llechwedd to close due to the loss of jobs, and for the sake of the industry itself. Neither do we want Llechwedd to not treat the site with some respect, in the interest of preservation (i.e. - not just for tourists)

I think, Dylan, that the point is this:

Nobody wants to see the quarry closed for any reason. You have, in the past, suggested that the untopping works may damage something-or-other in the old Bowydd/Votty workings: well, as that's inaccessible, so be it. Hopefully someone there will have made a record of what it was so that it is not lost forever.

The scrapping of movable items is a very different thing: and there seems to be a bit of an odd attitude from Greaves here. Surely if something is going to be sent off for scrap, it could be offered elsewhere for preservation at the same price?

In reality, nobody is going to go into competition with Greaves, either as a working mine or a tourist operation. Relics can be sold without worry that someone else will compete with Greaves.

Furthermore, there are some things no doubt lying around your site that may have been discarded but which can be resurected - for example trucks - and could be sold for considerably in excess of their scrap value. But let them decay to a point when they can not be saved and they'll only be worth scrap value.

Take your rail bending thingy: that was perhaps £5- £10 in scrap value but maybe £100 to the Ffestiniog Railway. What on earth is the logic in weighing it it? If there's anything else like that, then why not list it on here for a week to see if you can get more than scrap value for it?

Surely it's better to make more money now and see things being saved for future generations than to wait for them to decay and be sold for less in the future?
Hello again darkness, my old friend...

I also made the point in an earler post that items could be sold to collectors at a HIGHER price than scrap now. Although DylanW's response was to say it is to stop anyoe else making money out of it!

the stuff from quarry tours DID go in the skip my mate told me he loaded the skip with the j.c.b with the stuff 😮
