I noticed a new member joined yesterday and mentioned a family connection with Greenside Lead Mine - was wondering if anybody had any details of this mine they could pass on:

Nimrod will probably be able to give a detailed descripton.
Apparently deepest lead mine in Cumbria. Closed I think in the 60s, and has since been subject to much exploration by CATMHS and MOLES. The Lucy Tounge level I think was one of the main access adits. There is also a book on the mine by Ian Tyler.

There's also a very good book about Greenside (481 pages) by Samuel Murphy called 'Grey Gold'.

I also have access to the keys for Lucy Level if that's any help?

Off topic from the through trip, but at what level is the last drainage adit for this mine? (in other words how much isn't flooded?)

Everything below Lucy Tongue Level is now under water. Looking at the mine cross section it is possible to appreciate what a large portion of the mine is now no longer accessible, about 60%

Greenside Info.

The tragedy of July 1952 was the result of a weekend fire spreading carbon monoxide througout the workings. Miners approaching a winze on the Monday morning were driven back by fumes, but also heard the cries of Leo Mulryan who had already descended the winze. The rescue attempt that was mounted, although heroic and resulting in the subsequent awarding of medals, was unnsuccesful. Mulryan died and also, tragically, 3 members of the rescue team.
