Hi. I am a newly qualified Blue Badge Tourist Guide for Cumbria and I am doing Glenridding village walking tours over the summer. I have walked up around the Youth Hostel area and on Sheffield Pike many times and seen the mine spoil etc but it would be nice to know where things are. My husband tells me that there is a huge cavern inside Sheffield Pike where you would fit St Paul's cathedral - is this right? I would just like to know if there was any info we could tell visitors about what is inside the mountain now or something similar whilst we are walking round the village and up on Greenside road. Any help please? I have the Dalesmen Mining in the Lake Counties book and have been reading about the Helvellyn area but it would be nice to be able to relate the text to what you see on the outside! Are there any good books with photos or articles that I can look up? Many thanks, Melanie

Many thanks for that. The one, Greenside - a tale of Lakeland Miners, looks a good starting point! Thanks again, Melanie

Actually there are two but one's beyond the range of the average pocket.

The one "beyond the range of our average pocket" is an absolute masterpiece and possibly one of the best mining books ever written.
And whats more its available on line somewhere as a pdf. I am vague about this at this time of night. Maybe a tenner download charge I dont know.
But for what its worth, buy the book

Off now, missing the news, only thing worth watching on TV
