Very interesting link Graham. He describes Dali's Hole as Sinc Harriet (back to the discussion about when is a Twll a Sinc! 😉 )

I think we're simply into the vernacular here- a Twll in one quarry would be a Sinc in another - and what the men referred to it as and what the management referred to it as and what the London Office might refer to it as etc. etc. would all be different. Then we've got Welsh spellings of English and vice verce. That "map" of Dinorwic has both Sink and Sinc as well as other odd spellings.

One photo set just in front of the gated tunnel in Dali's hole said "In front of the tunnel to Sinc Juliet".
This proves that the tunnel wasn't constructed by the powerstation - so why have a need to gate it? Does it connect with powerstation?

Ps: Grahami - do you happen to know anything about the chamber in the pit just to the right of Dali's hole. I put a pic up on D user album though this isn't very clear.

Dinorwic has not been my study! It's unfortunate that there was no large scale OS mapping published of Dinorwic between the 3rd edition of the 25in. in 1912-14 and the National Grid post 1970! Just the period of maximum change. I did start to try to label the 1912-14 version once but it's very easy to get confused. I think this shows Juliet and Harriet below the steam mills - anyone else want a go ?

It continues uphill:

As for the power station, there's a ventilation chimney up from the main caverns - see this diagram, but I think that comes out much higher up!

What we know now as Dali's Hole is to the right of the No.2 Shed Mills and to the right of that is (I think) California.

What's interesting is that there's no trace of the Yard Mills, the No.2 Shed Mills or the big building in between, other than a small collapsed building on the site of the No.2 Shed.

The entrance to the drainage / access adit for 'Dali's Hole' is here: http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.122676&lon=-4.103018&z=17.2&r=0&src=msa  - I was vaguely looking for this yesterday as I walked past and it's where I thought it would be. I'd probably be grateful if you didn't try and unblock it LAP, not just for your sake ;)

Incidentally, the ventilation shaft pops out here: http://www.flashearth.com/?lat=53.120845&lon=-4.100681&z=17.2&r=0&src=msa

The tunnel to Sinc Juliet is visible here: http://www.geograph.org.uk/photos/30/95/309544_b41376a5.jpg  This is not indicated on the map, so I suspect that it must have been dug after that. It would have to have been quite a long tunnel to get anywhere as the land climbs high behind it.

There were the remains of a few buildings in the vicinity of the middle of the three mills (un-named on that map) until the mid 80s. They were demolished post 1985 but by 1988.

Does anyone know the purpose of the tunnel (HEPS work) that disappears in a northerly direction on (I think from memory) A7T level?

Managed to get to that lift incline above the powerstation today after some difficulty of transversing round a collapsing gallery. Very interesting though - there was also a couple of wagons behind there. We then went for a quick visit to Twll Mawr and the tunnel next to it.
