Is there a place for working quarries without any underground bits in the database. Only I'm quite fond of them myself and have loads of pictures.

Well.. there's Sandside Quarry near me, and that's completely surface, and I've uploaded several pics of that.

Quarries are just as welcome here as mines, in fact this has reminded me that for some time I've been meaning to add to the add/edit a mine page the facility to select mine or quarry from a drop-down menu. So that quarries aren't incorrectly referred to as mines. I'll try and get that done tomorrow night 🙂

Would you mind adding dolerite (whinstone) and sandstone to the mineral list please?

Ah, but there in lies a pitfall :oops: what a terrible pun! In North Wales "Quarries" often referred to "mines"! For instance, correspondence I had from a well known mine in Blaenau (before it was bought out by Greaves/Llechwedd) was headed Maen Offeren Slate Quarry Company Ltd. Although I have always known it pronounced as if it was one word.

I also have one letter from "Ffestiniog Slate Quarry Co. Ltd". This being Oakeley (dated 1972).

This also highlights something I intended to point out on this forum too. The name is "Maen Offeren" NOT "Maenofferen"

Good point John - once I've got the mine/quarry drop-down in place I can go back and tweak that. It's always bugged me that certain well known quarries such as Cwmorthin, Maenofferen (sorry!) etc are referred to here and elsewhere as mines...

I've added code to display alternative names against mines. Not the perfect solution in this case, but at least it does show the correct name now:
