It houses an electric generating turbine, I believe it was installed there in the 80's to power the adjacent saw table etc.
It sits in what appears to be an old water wheel pit on a timber framework, more or less complete but the the timber is in poor state these days, take care it you enter as its very unsteady

Thought I'd just post a query here, rather than interrupt the Llechwedd thread.
Does anyone know what McAlpines have done with the electric winder motor, controller and drums that were on show at Gloddfa Ganol ? Have they been scrapped ?
At the Office floor immediately below Gloddfa Ganol was the head of the "C Incline" which was where the drums and controller had come from. Is anything left of that ?

We had some fun getting the controller out of the C motor house - pulled it out through the door and it fell off the steps and cracked. Had to be tack-welded back together again for display.

I've uploaded some of my and the late Rodney Weaver's photos to the Oakeley archive album. They show the display winder adn its original location and the incredible 6-drum winder that used to be be there.

Hello all

I'm new to the site but a friend of mine (Al) has visited before and has asked me to contact a couple of people. Miles and Vanoord are the people he mentioned, but anyone with info about Cwmorthin would be useful. We're hoping to visit this weekend...

Many thanks x

Earlier in this thread mention was made of the Holland workings in the Oakeley upper quarry, which I know very little about and I have a couple or more of questions: -

Are there any old plans which show the chambering and veins worked in the part of the upper quarry known as Hollands? The chambers here are reputed to have been wide by Oakeley/Cwmorthin standards, suggesting good rock, as has been mentioned previously.

I've heard something about these chambers being flooded. does anyone know if this is correct? Slightly surprised by this as I thought it was much too far up in the workings unless chambers/levels have been blocked or dammed. Maybe I'm wrong on this one.

Also while I'm on the topic of plans and history etc, have often wondered why chambering wasn't significantlyy developed off Leval Ffrench, as I thought part of it at least ran through the back vein. Was the slate at this point not considered of sufficient quality to be worth extracting? Was it too hard, or was there an intrusion of another rock type entirely in this area? The chamber (11E) where level Ffrench reaches Cwmorthin, appears quite well developed, although it. looks as if this chamber could have yielded a lot more: The slate slab (where the stone footholds have recently been installed) is very impressive, Wonder if it is actually as good as it looks to my untrained eye!
