Rover Makes Good is a 16-minute B and W film shot by a Plymouth-based film company for the Children's Film Foundation in 1952. Apart from remarkable footage of O2 and Ivatt tank locomotives arriving with LSWR gated passenger stock at Luckett, the film centres upon two children becoming trapped in an adit (and being rescued by sheepdog Rover!).

I thought that I recognised East Kithill mine as the setting for the action but I'm not sure - the condition of one of the engine houses shown, with its roof intact, shows us how much we have lost since the early 1950s. Have a look for yourselves and see if you can identify the sett (or setts) used in the film. It does all end happily, by the way ....

One or two shots of South Kit Hill. The main action was focussed around Bayleys shaft at Hingston Down. The house is still standing to full height.

Cracking find!

Ah - that's answered one or two queries - thanks as ever. Glad you enjoyed the film: it's quite a resource in its own way I think.

Those pesky kids - I bet auntie and uncle were glad to get rid of them, the trouble they cause. And he shifted the dog too - result.

Seriously though, that was good fun - thanks for sharing.

An excellent film indeed ! Thanks for that. I wonder if the Morris Station Wagon would pass a crashworthy test today ? I don't think the gated stock would do too well either. Question.... What is the tune that is played at the beginning and with the end credits?
It was the intro.to a late '50's programme on the wireless I think.

The music used in the film is Non Stop, and it was used as the theme for Independent Television News broadcasts.
