Speaking of progress at Crofty - they have started erecting the scaffold around Cook's headframe, and although it is not visible from the road at present, it soon will be.
So keep your cameras fed and watered, as there will be some good photo opportunities available over the next few months.
It will be fully shrouded from top to bottom while it is grit blasted and painted.
They've chosen a very fetching shade of pink   sorry...couldn't resist :flowers:

It is good that they are preserving the headgear.

Robinson's looks incomplete without the cage guides. I hope they don't ****** it up.

from what i understand the headframe has not been "given" to the council its on a lease from w.u.m in case they need it later on

I wonder why they removed the shaft runners, as you say it would look odd.

The preservation will include the removal of the frame over the sheave wheels, and the wheels themselves.
These will be treated on the ground and then lifted back into position once repaired. The top deck is also going to be repaired/re-decked as its present condition could be described as being in 'larrups'

I've just added a picture of the top deck, taken last week.

Cooks used to be a real shake rattle and roll in the cage back in the early seventies, good to see they are doing something with the head frame.

Great to hear your confidence in mining coming back home to cornwall. I am about to embark on setting up a company to manufacture mineral processing equipment in west cornwall. I wasnt even considering the home market till now. 🙂

Welcome to the site and, may I say, it's good to hear from someone involved in the support industries.
The news that mineral processing equipment is to be once again manufactured in Cornwall, and West Cornwall at that, will be a real confidence boost for the local workforce involved in mining or mining related industries.
I worked at Bartles in North street Redruth in the early 70's making Bartle-Mozeley separators. Probably one of the last firms to manufacture processing equipment in this part of the world.
All the best in your business venture

Cheers Roy. Actually tables are still being manufactured in Pool by Holman Wifley.

I wonder what is going on at Crofty. There are all sorts of rumours.

I heard they have got pumps on order and they are coming.

I also heard that they have bought a load of big pipes from a mine somewhere else.

I see a lot of work down in the valley.

I heard that the sale of the site is now complete and now the mine can buy another piece of land off one of it's other companies.

I heard that Midas can now build a new estate.

I heard that progress is 100 below adit and the cover drill holes have cut water.

I also heard that pumping is going on at night.

I heard that the company is planning to enter old dolcoath workings with a view to stripping the capels off the copper lodes.

I heard the values are some of the most fabulous in the whole of the western world.

I also heard that the company doesn't plan to pump out the old workings.

I would very much like to see Crofty pumped out and providing an engine of economic growth in the area.

I raised my eyebrow to the idea that once the land sale has gone through, they will ****** off into the sunset. Some people are very cynical.

Discuss.

I should have looked at the website. It appears to be full of interesting information!

Including this:-

http://www.westernunitedmines.com/assets/documents/News_coverage/Resource_Update_05.09.12.pdf

Usually things get discussed on here quite promptly and I wondered what the latest developments were. I assume this document is quite recent. Many of them are not.

It's good to keep up to date. There is quite a web of people involved in local mining/education/consultancy and rumours do circulate wildly and get modified as they do resulting in some quite odd suggestions. Several people on here, namely Agricola and Knocker seem quite well informed without the usual bitter slant on things which seems pervasive. I'm quite aware of some people's take on things and hope they are very wrong, however there is little information circulating.

Hi Stuey, you were asking about pumping info the other day, you might or might not have seen this concerning groundwater rebound at Crofty when it last closed.

Yep. Interesting.

So, combining that with rainfall data (accurate) it would be possible to estimate the pumping requirements to dewater the original workings inside a number of weather assumptions...

It made me think about how the old men were put to work in Gwennap digging out drainage culverts, gutters, etc to minimise the rain soaking in/pumping costs. Given the nature of the roads/buildings, I imagine the stormwater is actually drawn off making it a lot drier than could be expected....most certainly a hell of a lot more than Jane.

If I told you all what's going on it wouldn't be so much fun reading about what you think is going on !
😮
If it can't be grown it has to be mined.

Some of this ( if not most), seems to be linked to the east west link road.

Slightly off topic, but anyone interested in industrial archaeology may wish to get down to the area now that they have cleared the gorse away before the area is altered.

Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
