During the 1970s and 1980s Leicester University used to run practical mine surveying courses in one of the smaller old micaceous hematite mines near Great Rock. There were two adits with an open stope in between with a new ladder installed to allow access up and down for the survey. I did the course in 1980 but for the life of me can't remember the name of the mine - anyone out there know it ? Here's an image of the lower adit entrance:

Thanks !
...and while I'm at it, here's wishing everyone a Happy New Year.
All the best,

Great Rock is still there and fully functional.

Contacting PCG will turn up who holds the keys.

Gents,

Silly me, should have been more precise - the one in Devon near Bovey Tracey. Now you should be able to see the image (see original post). Don't want to go there, just curious about the name of the mine if anyone recognises the entrance.

Cheers

It sounds very much like the workings on (Great Rock) North Lode.

I would strongly recommend Tony Brooks' book on the mine - well worth searching out.

Plymouth Caving Group holds keys - it would be worth contacting Dave Warne via the PCG website.

Happy New Year - The levels that you're on about are North Lode No.1 that you entered through old corregated rounded sheeting with the words 'Heaven and Hell' on either side with direction arrows. The setction that you dropped down to was the North Lode No.2 level.

Access arrangements have already been covered here so will not be repeated.
