I need some help with this one, my memory has failed me completely (again):

đŸ”—Personal-Album-3478-Image-36595[linkphoto]Personal-Album-3478-Image-36595[/linkphoto][/link]

This was the portal of a small lead 'mine' somewhere not far south of Weardale, up a side valley, not far from a bitumen road. This was mid 1970s. The story went that the guys that were working this were looking for lead and had gone through a load of cerussite and dumped it on their waste dump - galena being what they were after.

Any ideas what the name of the mine was ?

Note to self: it's never too late to start using a notebook...

Dear Imageo,

I believe this is a Photo of Yew Tree Lead Mine in the Bollihope Valley about 2 Miles South West from the Village of Frosterley in Werardale.
A moderner Photo of the Mine can be seen on the Yew Tree Lead Mine site of Aditnow Photo image 31 taken by James I.
I dont Know who the miner is though

Regards,
Catsam

Thanks Catsam,

Yes, it does indeed look like Yew Tree Lead Mine - that gentle slope behind the portal is a give-away.

The miner ? That's me when I had a lot more hair. From memory there was a locked gate just inside the portal.

One less query ! Thanks again,

Cheers

Yep its Yew Tree, it was being worked by Mick Maddison, before he started Harnisha Burn, I was opening the high Yew Tree level at the same time.

A lot of reliance was put on timber as a means of shoring up the level - that timber has since failed and in many places the level and stopes have collapsed big time.
