The timber deck at Contact Shaft station on 2 level ought to be avoided at all costs. It is now getting very rotten and it's a long way down to water.

That sounds like where we were - certainly a long way down and a timber deck. The give away (we were too naive to spot it) was the periodic holes at the edges of the tunnel were material had fallen through - don't think we even thought about them till we were on the way out..

Be very very careful near the end of the clay art gallery as there is a false floor, a section is missing and you can see a long way down

I've got some photos somewhere of that ore chute on 2 Level, taken about 1976. There was a "cunning plan" around that time, to pull or blow the chutes for bulk sampling of the contents by one or other of the parties contemplating the place, but fortunately wiser heads carried the day.

I don't care to think of the possible consequences, a general collapse of the rotten false floors, the whole lot descending into a great unstable pile and little or no sample recovery was a possible outcome.

Purely from a mining point of view, I wouldn't care to attempt any sort of underground recovery there and I can't see the nimbies allowing the headland to be worked by open-cast in any foreseeable future.

The opencast theme has rattled on for years but the grades have been consistently too low to be of any worth. With the sett belonging to the Duchy, I dare say in the future any
objections may be 'circumvented' for the good of the 'boss'..?
If the tin price stabilises at around $28,000 we will see a lot of action in this part of the county.
The overall stability of that whole intrusion is questionable, and some years ago sensors were installed as far back as the runway.
As for paint Geoff , I'm with you on that :curse: :curse: :guns: :guns:

you know what grades they're going to be working at Hemerdon Roy? just sayin' 🙂

Geoff, to be fair I doubt they put their bits of clay up specifically to p*ss you off. Agreed about the spray paint though, the only paint marks I'd be happy about would be surveyors ones...

I know the grade figures won't be getting anyone starry eyed, but I do think they have the reserves which I doubt Cligga has in a quantity to warrant opencast working.........yet!

The extract below is from the journal of the Cornwall Mining Development Association 1979, 31st annual report. Some good stuff in there. I'll see if I can get round to copying the lot and post it up.

Understand Cligga is an extremely significant bat site. Any operations would have to take this into account.

I've only seen one in there in the big stope.

I'd say it was an extremely significant potential bat site!

I know at Devon Friendship they were made to "unplug" Old Sump shaft (which still appears to be blocked, oddly). I'm not too sure about the effectiveness of bat site fussing in Cornwall give the total lack of action from any group regarding the Biopark and the plugging of shafts/ventilation pathways.

Only 2 bats Stuey? About 10 years ago I lost count at around 75 And there were other places I didn't go, where I've seen bats previously.
Most times there are at least 10 or12 scattered about.
The new company, if it ever gets going, are said to be leaving all levels untouched and just concentrating on 5 level as I mentioned before. They will, no doubt, have to clear a level out as an emergency egress. The beach adit would be most likely candidate for that.

PCG member who is a professional bat worker said one of the odities about bats in Cligga is why they are there. Greater Horseshoe bats normally use features like walls to follow between roosts & feeding sites, which are lacking there. Perhaps they follow the cliffs round to valleys at Perranporth or Trevellas then follow the valleys inland. Numbers believed to be in excess of 100.
