Hi Folks,
as it's getting near christmas (sorry but it's true!) i've had various relatives asking what i'd like, and i thought of suggesting the hard knee pads i've seen several folks using. However, i can't work out where you've all gotten hold of them from! i've tried caving supplies, inglesport and general web searching and have drawn a blank- can anyone help?!

The old NCB type knee pads are fab if you intend to do huge amounts of crawling,or spend a lot of time on your knees (insert your own cheap innuendo at this point), however they are a pain in the a*** to walk in as they tend to dig in and rub.

If you are considering kneepads I would strongly recommend going for a set of Warmbac "Warmtex" pads, they are very comfy to wear and absolutely bomb proof - I've been using them for 15 years and am only on my second pair. The ones I am currently using have velcro straps which are very handy.

Kermit's neoprean, velcro adjustable knee pads are the dogs dangalies. :thumbup:
I did have a pair of beaver ones but the buckle broke on one and the other destroyed itself on a trip through Priddy Grim Stink!! :thumbdown:
I can't offer an opinion on the miners hard knee pads, but, they do look a tad uncomfortable to walk in though!
Better to regret something you have done - than to regret something you have not done.

Regarding the Old Style NCB knee pads,the older more Oval knee pads were much more comfy than the latter Square`er shape.

Anyone know if this type is available today?

Hubby used the miners type for years but cant get new straps for them now :(
i have new pvc cpated neoprene ones with velcro now so he has my old neoprene ones
they used to cut the back of his knees tho and were good for scooping up rocks he says.
the neoprene ones roll down in muddy crawls like colostomy tho :(


what was wrong with the old prene? :lol:

The Beaver ones Bernies sell are quite good, £12.50ish, my last pair I also impact adhesived 6mm camping mat in the inside - very comfortable.

A current work colleague who used to work in the Durham pits in the 80s says that in order to wear the NCB pads comfortably, you should only do up the lower of the two straps. That's no good for crawling, of course, but I suspect he spent much of his working day upright.

We also only used to fasten the lower strap,don`t rub the back of your knee`s so much,and were fine for working in low seams,but the older type fitted the shape of the knee better,allowing less small coal to congregate between your knee and the pad.

I can recommend Warmbac neoprene kneepads - my pair is still going strong after over 15 years, including using them for plumbing and painting skirting boards. The Warmbac and beaver ones are either not as comfortable or have a much shorter life. Regid knee pads with straps may be good for kneeling height digs but are annoying if you get grit and stones between the pad and your knee and dig in if you walk. Warmbac have a website.

Thats why Miner`s only use the one strap,you can shake out the grit when you get up off your knee`s

They look like they may last,i`m comparing to the Old NCB ones i used to use before in the Colliery,but at that price thier worth a try.

I`m even worse than you on the PC butty,Who sells these?

One of these days, someone will make an oversuit with loops built in above and below the kneeto accomodate the straps on pads and stop them heading welly-wards in crawls.....

Maplin IIRC are cheaper. £7ish. Best bit is, try em on in store, generally, there's a pair out of the box.
