I decided there was nothing I liked on the market and made my own. I basically took the hard plastic layer and the gel pad from a pair like these:

That way you combine the excellent protection of the upper with the tendency to stay put of the lower. It's a lot of work but I'm glad I did it!

I had thought of doing that sort of thing but for the time being I am going to give the Warmtex ones a go first.

Don't look so embarrassed, it's a family trait...

After twenty years of caving and mine exploration I am on my second pair of Warmbac "warmtex" pads which are still in really good shape - they really are bombproof.

The only downside is that they can roll down just when you don't want then to.
