My grandmother's grandfather Richard Thomas Hall was (I think) appointed as an engineer to the Redruth and Chacewater Railway in 1844. Does anyone know anything about this? :blink:

Richard Hall was superintendent engineer on th R & C Rly until
1865.
In that year he was sent by John Taylor & Sons to the O'okiep & Port Nolloth Rly in South Africa as engineer.

Thanks for this. I was hoping for some information about his early life - his South African career is pretty covered. Any suggestions about where to look?

Cornwall Studies Library (Redruth) are pretty well stocked and have helpful staff.

I'd look there first, and then look here:-

But the record office has a mind boggling amount of stuff which will hurt your brain.
