New East Engine House became one of the Earliest Electricity substations in the County.

If You look at the pictures you will see the bob wall has been filled in with a rubble wall and there is a series of ducts where the conductors used to enter (Very similar to how modern substations are built on the continent). Until recently there was a solid concrete floor mid way up the substation, where entry could only be gained from the steel door in the earlier photo, which I guess would have housed the transformer. The swicthgear was located in the building (I'm not sure if it is the old boiler house) attached to the engine house of which some of the roof trusses are visible in the earlier picture, if you enter the building now you will see the cable trenches.

You will also notice in the picture the presence of a pole mounted transformer, which has taken over from the substation in the engine house, the electrical network is still very much the same in that are as it was in 1913.

The building alongside the engine house housed the switch gear for the sub- station. The station was installed for the californian stamps when they were electrified

A closer view. I was wondering what those ducts were if that's what is meant.

As you can see in that picture the bob wall has been in filled and those ducts installed, I have seen one picture from when it was a substation. The power system was a joint venture between several of the mines (You'll notice the substation at Crofty is a similar vintage) and the tram company, with the original power station being the tram depot that was where Mcdonalds now is. As the power plant became unable to cope with the demand it was decided to build a new power station, with two sites shortlisted (Hayle and Par), which led to the construction of Hayle Power Station, which was subsequently rebuilt in the 1930's as electricity became more of a household commodity. There are still a few of the very old substations in use including South Crofty and Lanner Primary, which was originally erected to supply Tresavean for its reopening.

Very interesting although I admit the technical details are slightly beyond me. Strangely I read part one of those articles because it relates to the Tramway. No doubt you have read it or have a copy but on the off chance that you haven't there is a link in the Tramway entry.
