Regarding Carnglaze Caverns: I'm suprised Tom the Stick (ferret) didn't inform you that Carnglaze Caverns is now a tourist attraction with concrete floors etc, and is also used as a venue for concerts and seats 400. There is the "Rum Bar" within the cavern. I actually know the owner, who has allowed us access to the adit level and where the public do not go. The lower levels are now flooded making not much accessible now.

Regarding Penn Recca Slate Mine: I can take a trip in there almost anytime through the top entrace which will invlove a 120 ft. descent down a shaft. I understand that the bottom entrance (Adit) has now been secured with a new lock as the last lock was broken off and caused a tremendous amount of problems as this adit level is the main water supply to the valley farms etc.
If anyone wishes to have a trip I'll organise it, but you'll have to be SRT competent.

Regards Tin Miner

Thanks for that, the answear to a long lived question ;D
Living in Cumbria I can't make regular visits to The South West, although I'll probably be going next summer... so would it be possible to have a look at bothh some time them (Carnglaze included)
Obviously no date yet.. (weather dependant), but it's just an idea. If Simon or whoever can get there 1st then thats great
Cheers

ya sorry i didn’t think to mention about carnclaze being a tourist spot, it kind of went to the back of my mind at the time, not that much to see but an interesting place none the less. And Mr. LAP just let us down in the west know your coming and you will be very welcome and many good trips undertaken!

It's bloody slippy in there, take care!

A big hole though.

As DCUC access officer I am still trying to arrange access, however the situation at the moment is not good as the owners (the Church Commissioners) do not want access.
I am trying to arrange an appeal. Nothing heard from them for last 2 weeks which may be positive: who knows?

fraid not but its a great shame that the church Commissioners cannot see the pro's of legitimate regulated access though DCUC particularly for practice purposes for the local cave rescue. i do hope they see sense soon

I realize this is quite an old strand, but can anyone tell me whether access has been negotiated to the Penn Recca slate mine in Devon, near Buckfastleigh? Could anyone tell me who the parties involved with the negotiations are? I work for a TV company - I'd like to know whether it would be possible for us to go down there...

Thanks! 🙂

Unfortunately as far as I am aware the present situation is that the Church Commissioners are quite firm in not agreeing to any access. I negotiated access for DCUC many years ago when their agents were quite amenable, but with a change in management that is no longer the case. However best to contact DCUC through their website (I'm no longer directly involved).

Ok - thanks so much for your reply. Do you know of any tin mines in the Dartmoor area that are accessible? Particularly in the Ashburton stannary...

Thanks again!

Again best to contact DCUC. Tin mines in the Ashburton area generally have little accessible, but DCUC does have access to a number of iron mines, one quite spectacular.

Did you mean spectacular or specular 😉

Contact me off-line as I have a great deal of knowledge of the Tin Mines all over Dartmoor.

Penn Recca is a nice slatey mine with a nice drop with a few passages above and below and as stuey says are very slippery. But its a nice place. There was a collapse in there which a few of us tried to dig through.
Love it . . . 🙂

The collapse was dug through many years ago, but I think collapsed again. A survey of what was beyond was published in the DSS Journal. Last time I was there noted that there was a significant draught at that point; the collapse may have been at the foot of a shaft. All academic now we have no access.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
