First thoughts are which "Tipton", second thought is it's not a coal mine, or a mine the Coal Authority is responsible for.

Send the OP a PM assuming he's still active on here.

Hello again,

Its Tipton "black country"
I was just guessing is was coal as i had a OS map from the 1800s with it on saying "old shafts"

Sorry for the confusing question, i'm new too all of this i bet you must think i don't know what i'm on about.
You would be right....:tongue::tongue:

Thanks for your help too.

Everyone has to start somewhere, keep at it.:)

Only other info the image appears to convey is that the right hand retaining wall may have been re-pointed.

A couple of questions arise;

What scale is the entrance?

What is the arching made from?

Without a clear idea of how large the hole is it does look a bit like a haulage portal/railway tunnel and the arching looks a little like concrete so if that's the case it may be quite recent.

Or I could be talking drivel!

Ive not been there myself yet, still trying to find the place and i basically live in Tipton. I know that there was a mine in upper church lane Tipton, but been all round there and looking at OS maps from the 1800s those shafts have been filled in. All i know is this photo was taken in 2008 so there must be something resembling this around still
Would like to find it and investigate it for myself.

Thanks for your reply.

If you transfer the top of the arch, (underside) across to the left hand retaining wall and count the brick+joints to ground level it works out at around 6 feet.
The width looks a little more.

Hi all, I took this photo many years ago. The portal is bricked up a few yards in, and as it is a coal mine, i would not rate the air quality!!
It is not a simple walk-too entrance, in fact its far from it.

I adjusted the exposure and noticed the (ladders?) leaning on the left hand wall and the end wall between our posts.;D

It is more likely to be an old lime kiln ? There are some similar at the Black Country Museum by the canal tunnel entrance

Do the other two prefer Lesley Judd ?

Hi,
I think photo shows one of the 'Lapal' canal tunnel portals, tunnel collapsed and was abandoned some time ago.

Limestone mine, no coal mines in Tipton from an adit. Its probably a portal on Kates Hill or Wrens Nest

Hi all,

I believe this is clearly visible on the Dudley Canal Trust boat trip and is located in Shirts Mill basin castle hill. The name escapes me but you have Flooded mine (limestone) portal on the opposite side of the basin.There is no access and nothing to see as filled in long ago.Hope this helps.

Tipton Mine.

If you select "Guide Map" it shows two mines off the shirts mill basin, one of which is annotated as Tipton mine. Are we all talking about the same mine?

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
