Visiting this mine yesterday, we found a very strong outward draught at the point where you go through the narrow opening on the left at the end of the entrance passage and drop into the passage leading down to the climb into the bottom level. Never noticed this on any previous visit and couldn't find the draught again elsewhere in the mine. Has anyone else encountered this? Any ideas as to the source as on the face of it there is no surface connection other than the normal entrance?

I've not been in Silver Eye for a while, but I don't recall any possible ways on in the further reaches of the mine. Have the Goodluck lads been poking at anything on the surface nearby recently, I wouldn't have thought the digs at the back end of Goodluck would have any connection through?

Down Good luck we may be busy but not us!
My guess is the Derby Demolition mob in the Ball Eye Quarry have broken into the mine workings again, or opened something up with blasting.[center]

Would have thought it would be more likely to be something in Dene rather than Ball Eye if it's quarrying-related?

The distance from Ball Eye and the fact that it is on the opposite side of the valley makes it very unlikely. Dean Quarry is over a kilometre from Silver Eye. However, some of the Silver Eye workings do intersect natural fissures (for instance there is a working off the right hand passage at the top of the spiral climbing way, not shown on the 1971 Flindall and Hayes survey, that connects with some fissures loosely filled with rock) and I suppose these theoretically could connect with the surface over some distance.

Further to AR's comment regarding Goodluck I've been in touch with Dave Barrie and he says they've not been doing anything near Silver Eye. However, interestingly, he says they have been picking up a lot of draughts recently in Goodluck.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
