I was mooching around in the woods by Baddesley yesterday, when I came across a recently fenced mine shaft at approx SP 277 979.

It's not close enough to be part of either Baddesley Colliery, Speedwell Pit or Baddesley Ensor. There were also what appeared to be some sparse stone/brick foundations close to the shaft. Anyone any ideas, so that I know where to post the photos?

Thanks

Old Maps (1903 at 1:2500) has what appear to be two tramway tunnels a little south of your NGR, anywhere near the shaft/buildings?

Edit: Two square shafts in area of red ellipse on 1888 map.

Hi Morlock and thanks. Yes, the tramway tunnel is part of Baddesley Colliery, and there are 3 capped shafts on site, but this was further north. I've marked up all the shafts shown on Oldmaps onto Memory map, and this one wasn't any of them, even allowing for any Victorian inaccuracies. It was too far north and east to be part of Baddesley, hence my query.

Seem to list several shafts in that rough area.

There are some undocumented limestone workings that are not very deep around there, one of them has tricky access to several flooded chambers, maybe its linked with limestone and not coal?

In about 1976 I rode a bike race that used Baddesley as the headqurters. We showered in the pit head baths, after the race I looked around the shaft tops, no-one hindered me, (there were not too many people about, it was a Sunday) I just wandered around looking everywhere, an excellent afternoon.
That contrasted with a race based at a Miners welfare 'club' somewhere near Mansfield a few weeks later, the 'club' was a sort of wooden shack with one chemical toilet for 60 cyclists, and before a race most riders want to visit the bog. Well, it overflowed, more than overflowed, the smell permeated most of Nottinghamshire.

If It's the one I'm thinking of, just off waste lane. Then it was an early attempt to create a tunnel/adit access into existing mine workings on the other side of the road. It was never completed.

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
