Hardly anybody realises that Hodbarrow was not a successful mine ; it was a spectacularly successful mine. Despite enormous technical challenges, it made huge profits and was the envy of every other Cumbrian mine for many years.
Geographically and to the industrial archaeologist, it was unique and fascinating.

Little remains today except the Outer Sea Wall, commissioned by the Hodbarrow Mining Co for £588,000 in 1900 (value now?) and paid for out of net profits!!

Monographs on mining history no. 2 'Cumberland Iron' by A. Harris (Published by D. B. Barton) about the fortunes of Hodbarrow from 1855 - 1968 is a good read with maps and many B & W photos.
My copy was printed in 1970 so it's most likely out of print now, but second hand editions could still be available - try Mike Moore, he may be able to help.

Thanks for the message. I've got the book and it's very good but I think there must be a lot of info still to be dug out of the records. One of those things I'd love to do if I didn't have to work!

That's OK then. I spent a morning about 15 years ago wandering around Hodbarrow and was gobsmacked how little there was left on the surface for such an important iron ore producer.
