Did this collapse in on itself through natural causes or overuse?

I would guess from a combination of both causes. the new way is both safer and quicker, but not as exciting???

If that is where I think it is, are you suggesting there's an alternative route?

Chris.

Hi Chris, hope you are well.
The new entrance is to just keep going along the horse level. The new dig is very well executed, and put in by Paul Thorne, Mole (Hine) and Company last November.
The old way, via the shaft became very unsafe and would have gone completely eventually.

A slightly belated Happy Birthday to you Roy! ๐Ÿ˜‰

Thanks for that Roy, I thought that particular area of interest was gone for ever!

I trust you're up to your usual digging tricks somewhere.

Well done Paul, Mole etc.

Chris.

Am I right in thinking that this photo was taken not a million miles away from a 'spiral' staircase???

If you mean the horse steps on scaleburn vein, then yes you are correct, congratulations to Mole, paul, et al, at making the trip to the horse whim accessable to all including the old and infirm!!

That's made me a very happy chappy, had wanted to go and visit on my last trip up there but couldn't due to condition of old route. So thanks to those that have made it possible

The way to the horse whim has been cleared out? Brilliant, my friends and I went in there to look for it last September and gave up when we saw the notice at the entrance to the Scaleburn Vein level in Rampgill (which said it was unreachable). We must go back again now ๐Ÿ™‚

Speaking of digs at Nenthead, has the blockage on the Middlecleugh 2nd Sun Vein in Smallcleugh been cleared yet, there doesn't seem to be any recent news?

Mr Mike and friends, hindered by me, had a go at this last year, putting timber in etc.
You will have to get the current sitrep of Mr Mike.

We were down there a couple of weeks ago and it was just as it appears in the post-repair photos where Roy was involved.

Thanks to all who were involved in that.

Speaking of those photos, did the dog go down the mine too ?
I thought I saw paw prints near the ballroom, but assumed I was going crazy

Surely easier access will just speed the detoration of the Horse Whim?
The old route would have been fine for quite some time before it became impassable...

Hi Jason
There are a lot of conflicting opinions on this subject. The thing is that one of the most difficult of access places at Nenthead must surely have been the Brewery Shaft when NPHT allowed free access. 262 foot SRT, and yet artefacts were disappearing all of the while. The horse gin could well have been the site of an accident if left to the old route. I just donโ€™t think that leaving it as was balanced out.
All of the clay pipes have gone from there, and I canโ€™t see anyone vandalising the remains of whim. However, it will now be accessible to more people including those who are not as able as rest of us.

She's down there on a regular basis - has her own lamp, and no matter where you are in the mine, if you say 'c'mon, lets go home' she'll find the fastest route out.. she digs holes for timbers VERY well!!
