...I have a question. I lived at Cannop 60 plus years ago I am familiar with this area of the photo. when I was there it was being reopened by a group of miners, they were digging out the acumulated rubbish on the floor. To my knowledge the tunnel was stone lined, and a shaft to this tunnel was on the opposite side of the road about 50 yards up the bank. At that time there was a lockable gate at the enterance no doubt to keep nosy kids like myself out. If there is a history of this activity or the result I I would be most interested
Thankyou

Cannop drift mine closed recently - but the same freeminers have started another mine close to Cinderford.
Robin Morgan has his pit and museum at Hopewell close to Howlers Slade, which is still going.
And there is another freemine at the bottom of Bixslade (can't remember its name, but it is close to the Monument Mine memorial). This mine is close to Mine Train Quarry.
Long live freemining and lets hope the miners are selling lots of coal in the cold weather!

The working mine close to the Memorial is known as Monument - delegates at this years NAMHO conference had a cracking trip into the mine.

You're right. The Phoenix is on the opposite side of the road to Hopewell, and is, I understand, worked by Robin during the winter months. Monument mine at the bottom of Bixslade was certainly working a few weeks ago when we were there.

Cannop drift was deserted.
Where there's a mine or a hole in the ground.
That's where I'm heading for that's where I'm bound
So follow me down Cousin Jack
(Grateful thanks to Show of Hands)

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
