that sounds good to me, but i'm hoping Jones the Slate can be pursuaded to join us for Odin Mine, he knows it much better than me- i've only been in there once!

The key thing you need to remember in Odin is which way to go when you drop onto the cone at the bottom of the 30' pitch - go back east under where you've just come from, as westwards lies a 150' drop into the lower workings!

I'm entirely up for an abseil into Titan on the sole provio that someone winches me out. ;)

He He! Me and a couple of mates did it the hard way: In thru Peak, lots of crawling and excellent caving to the bottom of Titan which had been rigged the night before. Up the rope, up the rope some more, up even more rope until your thighs cannot stand it anymore. The prussik up is mega!

Followed by a very long, very cold wait at the top for the last two de-rigging. Much puffing and panting was heard in the dug shaft, steam rising from it as a sweaty caver jugged on up. When they called up to see if anyone was waiting I didn't answer. After more puffing and panting up the shaft drifted "The b*st*rds! They've all f*cked off to Castleton!"

I'm too big for crawls and people generaly can't abide the whinging...

Nah! It's all good. (Colostomy aside)

Dragging this back to the subject ;)

Are we any closer to firming up a date for this if enough people are interested?

Weren't we going to do the Easter weekend? 23/24 April? Or would that be really busy - perhaps 30/31st April would be better.

I agree though; let's pick a date and I'll get it posted up.

Apologies btw - I've got stack loads of jobs like this to do, and quite a lot of PMs to reply to 😞 I'm not being slack, I'm rebuilding some parts of the site for the server move this week...

Either suits me.
Based on my fairly limited knowledge of the Peak District I'd suggest Castleton as a base unless anybody has a better idea?

Castleton will be heaving Easter weekend.

Be better trying to book a camping barn or summat the weekend either.

Thorpe Farm near Hathersage is a good bet.

Looking at their website it seems that one of the pubs in Hathersage runs a courtesy bus back to the bunkhouse on a night.

That narrows it down. There's only 2 pubs in the centre of Hathersage... 😉

And true to form it's not one of them that does the courtesy transport. It's the Millstone, about a mile the far side of the village.

Of course, if you want to actually stay at a mine, don't forget that the agent's house at Magpie mine is the PDMHS bunkhouse, and it's within walking distance of a decent pub....

Some aerial views here http://www.kap.toadstone.com/photo/index.html
The last photo is the Agent's Cottage/bunkhouse and very nice it is too. Plenty of free parking and as can be seen by the view of the village from the mine it's not that far away to the pub, The Cock & Pullet. Ironically in these days of boarded up pubs littering the UK landscape this pub opened in 1995 and is by all accounts a belting little pub.

Ha, could be.

Is the bunkhouse open to outsiders Adam? Can't find anything about it on the PDMHS website.

Very true. The old pub was called the Devonshire I think. I'm surprised the new one wasn't called the Duck or the Ash Tree & Duck. From my finger in the ear folk days there used to be a song about the Sheldon duck. Apparently in the 1600's a duck flew into an ash tree in the village and never appeared again. Sometime later in the early 1900's (I think) the said tree was cut down and on being sawn up the image of the duck was there, plain for all to see. Where the "figured" piece of wood is now is anyones guess.

The song I believe was penned and sung by the Ripley Wayfarers. It featured on one of their albums complete with a drawing of the duck. (from memory).

Peter.

Edit ...... found it, it was on their "Five Wells" album of 1972, doesn't time fly 😮

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
