There's a pub name that wasn't chosen accidentally...
Very true. The old pub was called the Devonshire I think. I'm surprised the new one wasn't called the Duck or the Ash Tree & Duck. From my finger in the ear folk days there used to be a song about the Sheldon duck. Apparently in the 1600's a duck flew into an ash tree in the village and never appeared again. Sometime later in the early 1900's (I think) the said tree was cut down and on being sawn up the image of the duck was there, plain for all to see. Where the "figured" piece of wood is now is anyones guess.
The song I believe was penned and sung by the Ripley Wayfarers. It featured on one of their albums complete with a drawing of the duck. (from memory).
Peter.
Edit ...... found it, it was on their "Five Wells" album of 1972, doesn't time fly 😮
