Lee, I notice some of your older photos describe this as Wyatt's shaft, in actual fact this is Greengates mine if you want to amend your captions

Wyatt's shaft is the really big one next to the ruined building to the west, close to another shaft which I'm certain is the old founder shaft referred to in freeings and so probably dates from the 1780s. The east Fieldgrove engine shaft between Wyatts and the one in the photo was started between 1828 and 1840 - John Robey's article on the mine had this one listed as Wyatt's, but we've now proved otherwise.

Here's a quickly annotated screengrab from Google Earth showing where everything is:

Thanks for info.
I was a bit confused, especially has the photos were from 2007.

I'll change the photos, do the photos want moving to seperate mines or leaving in Fieldgrove as per the name of the vein?
I went in a mine once.... it was dark and scary..... full of weirdos

When do I get my soapbox, I need to rant on about some b***cks

Greengates Mine is Robeys shafts 4 and 5 on the Feild grove vein.
Mark descended the shaft in the photo above when we paid a visit to the area. The exact date escapes me and for some reason i cant find the report or photo's on our forum.
I made a video of him descending the shaft. If memory serves it is about 20-25m deep with a short level leading to another short shaft which was too dodgy to descend on the day but may be worth looking at sometime Mark reported.
A penny was at the top of the second shaft and it looked like maybe it had been placed there by a previous explorer.

Edit: Correction - I meant Greengates is shafts 3&4 (not 4 & 5)

Hi Lee, since all the mines along the vein were consolidated into the Fieldgrove title in the 1840s it's probably as well to keep them all together in one album rather than creating new entries. I did notice the date on the photos, back in 2007 we only had John Robey's article to go on, which wrongly identified Wyatt's shaft as the eastern one, put Kirkdale mine to the east of where it actually was and couldn't place Greengates and Woodfurlong mines at all. Recent exploration and archival digging has changed all this! :flowers:

Thanks for clearing that up. I probably did use Robey's account to name the shaft.

I'm also not sure why the photos weren't already in the album, although they were on ME and unforntunately I can't find the original photos

Disclaimer: Mine exploring can be quite dangerous, but then again it can be alright, it all depends on the weather. Please read the proper disclaimer.
