Hello, I'm new to this site and was wondering if anyone could help me out with a problem I have with a protector SL lamp, thanks.

The lamp was dry when I got it so I have changed the wick and filled it with fuel, I left it overnight and have drained off the excess fuel. The wick only burns for a few minutes then goes out, it doesn't seem to be drawing up the fuel quick enough to keep the flame burning. I've used the same wicks and fuel on another protector SL and it works fine, thanks.

If it has a similar two part wick as the Type 6 is it possible the two parts are not making good contact? How long is the wick?

The wick is about an inch long and I gently push it down with a needle to make sure it touches the permanent wick inside the lamp. I've tried taking the wick out of the lamp that works but it still goes out!

Not may options left now except things like the permanent wick/absobent filling are contaminated.
I mention contamination as a mate bought a lamp someone had previously filled with Linseed oil!

Just in case it helps. I once had a lamp where the wick had burned down too far and got away with it for years by packing up with cotton wool on top of the permanent wick.

Thanks that makes a lot of sense, the felts could be contaminated and are no longer absorbent enough.

I would suggest you dry out the suspect lamp, remove the top wick and squirt some lighter fuel down the tube to get an indication of absorption rate though the permanent wick. I would guess the initial rate should be quite high.

Edit: Are you testing the lamp assembled or open?

Thanks, I've tried that the level takes quite a while to drop. I've also tested the lamp assembled and open it doesn't seem to make any difference!

If you suspect the stuffing to be contaminated you could try removing the sliding part of the wick tube sticking a tube and funnel on the fixed tube and back flushing? Not sure what solvent, petrol, acetone etc?

Only other option is take the bottom off, a bit drastic if the problem turns out to be something else.

Might give the petrol a miss but could try the acetone, It was only bought as an ornament but would like to have it working, thanks.

Something similar to petrol is what they are designed to work on (Colzaline)
Acetone is too flamible (IMHO) if there is any residue then it could flash up and burn you.
Try lighter fuel of Colman fluid from a camping shop.
It will also run on parrafin but not as well.

I'm fairly sure all flammable vapours/liquids will be OK if done outdoors and also not in a low lying area.

Has the OP tried contacting Protector, might be the best bet? Maybe it's because the top wick, I think it's called the trimming wick might have been inserted incorrectly. From memory a length of wick is doubled over at one end and is then pushed down the wick tube using a bradle or screwdriver until it touches the permanent wick in the wick tube.

I suspect the SL has the same wick as the Type 6.



Edit: Wick is much cheaper from general oil lamp shops & Fleebay.

These folk are experts in their field. I've bought a lot of wicks, mantles, washers etc. from them over the years. They really know their stuff.

I'm pretty sure it's the 1/4" round wick for the Protector lamps.

Found this on Wiki whilst rooting about for something cheaper than Coleman fuel.
