I used to live directly opposite the "pit headgear" of Sowden No.4 (where 1 to 3 were, I've no idea)
The engine house, on Lloyd Lindsay's smallholding/allotment was already stripped of its equipment in the 60's, though the glazed Farnley Fireclay tiles and bricks inside looked superb.
There was also a hand-winch on top of the spoil heap to the left of the shaft when seen from Low Moor Side Lane - we used to get really mucky laikin' on that. The small glazed brick building in front of the headgear was full of switchgear for the pumps (Leeds Corporation Waterworks) before it was demolished and the (I think they were 10-inch cast iron) pipes were piled at the side of it for years - we used to put bangers in them - it gave off a lovely ring.
The whole area has been redeveloped as far as I can see on Google Earth and is as flat as a pancake now, with no traces remaining from the pit. My sister and I posted a few pics of the disused pit on Leodis a while back.
http://tinyurl.com/oyuaown There was also a shaft in the inside corner made from Walsh Lane and Low Moor Side Lane according to the Coal Authority, but most of the mining remains I remember seeing as a young lad were in the fields close to Sidney Stephenson's farm in the old centre of New Farnley and across the fields towards Gildersome.
I'll post a map of the "holes" in and around New Farnley and Farnley Forge - there were lots of them!
Cheers
