Hi all my names pete and i have a question i so hope you will be able to answer me after searching for a long time. as a student in 1995 a group of us were taken from leeds to some welsh slate mines .. possible dinorwig. We were taken for a walk one morning up into the slate mines. now its a faint memory..but we were walking round a corner and on the right side i can only describe it as the most terrifying hole in the ground i have ever seen. i remember a cable spanning the lenght of the pit and on the left had side an old rusty ladder running down into the depths. its a memory that has been with me for 15 years. I would love to see photos or possible visit the site that scared me to the point of death all those years ago. all the best pete johnson

hi pete welcome to an.

do you recall anything else? a place it was near?

have you looked at the photos on the site?

it may have been dinorwig as the cables ties in quite well but could have been some others. have a look at penyrorsedd possibly.

dinorwic has a footpath running right through the middle and looks down upon llanberis and can be visited. it is near the national slate museum.

penyrorsedd is a working quarry so no official access ;-)

i'm sure other will have other suggestions

The cable and ladder does sound like Dinorwic to me (you would have to climb up from the permitted path to see these).

I believe there were ladders at Penyorsedd. But while there is only one cable traversing it today, there were several in 1995.
Been injured while at work and are not to blame?

hi thanks for the reply. im sure it was dinorwig as we visited the powerstation the day before and also a naught night in the pub (teachers were great in those days) As im stood there looking at it the right had side and the back wall rose vertically and to the left hand side there was a a path running to the back into what a can remembers as been a tunnel. The big scary hole was about 60 to 80m wide but thats only a rough guess. my teacher mr lambert told us storys of climbing along the cable and climbed the stairs back out !!!

Sounds like the Australia Pit at Dinorwic. Should be plenty of photos in the Dinorwic album.

thinking about it tamarmole may have made a good call there with vivian.

Edit: except the detail of the path on the left hand side to the tunnel. can't recall a tunnel at the back of vivian? so will go with australia pit

The 'tunnel' could have been the archway you walk though to get to Vivyan.

However I suspect not - the OP says: "We were taken for a walk one morning up into the slate mines."

'Up into the slate mines' does not chime with walking across a car park.

I haven't been to Dinorwic since I was a lad - could this be what we are talking about? [http://www.aditnow.co.uk/showimage?f=/lightbox/Dinorwig-Slate-Mine-User-Album-Image-65218/]

I remember seeing the same. I worked at Dinorwic on the pumped storage scheme in the 70s. I remember that the was a cable going accross a slate pit with the remains of an old blondin hanging from it. The pit it was in was up in the quarry on the left just past the power station ventilation shaft.

thanks for all the replys. this one rally is a tough one. having looked through a few albums ive found a couple of possibilities

this one is just how i remembered it. the track running down the left hand side also the cable housing also on the left. the only difference is the opening at the front is to narrow. as i remember it was like the photo of Twll Mawr. there was a big slab at the front of the pit you could stand on

if only i could photo shop the two i would have the big scary hole 😞

Sorry to pitch in here but isn't there a wire and blondin over a deep pit with ladders on Dinorwic Pen Garret level.... (Excuse spelling as on cognac and ice waiting for plane ome!)

The reason I say this is I remember ladders and a big bl@@dy ole round the corner from the mess room with all the scratched in names!

Think that was it......
