Hello,
I have been doing some family history research and have found an ancestor whose occupation is stated as a "check wergman at clay pit". I have done some googling but the term doesn't seem to exist. I was hoping some kind soul on this forum would be able to enlighten me as to what this term means and what he would have done for a living.
Thank you very much

I assume this is a misprint, mis-spelling or misreading of the term 'check weighman'

your ancestor would have had the job of weighing the production ( presumably by operating the weighbridge, checking the loaded and unloaded tubs ) and keeping the records by which workers were paid on piece-work

well, the check weighman was not someone to be lightly offended - men were paid by his records 😮
