Hi all,

Just registered and thought I'd say hello! I live in Camborne and have always been fascinated by the area's mining history since first I came here. This site has been a great resource for research into some of the mines, and so I thought I'd join up. :)

I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to liking to know how things worked, so I am interested in the engines and equipment used in the mines, particularly of the 18th-19th centuries; I find it amazing what people were able to do without so much of the technology we now take for granted! I spend a fair bit of time walking around the old mines here, as I live on the old Dolcoath mine sett, and also near the Great Flat Lode Trail!

Other interests include science/how stuff works, general history, scale model building, and an obsession with most things aviation.

Cheers,

Dave

Welcome to aditnow Dave. It must be great to live in God's own country. I'm stuck up in Worcester, miles from any decent sites, but make the occasional trip down to Carharrack for a mooch around.
Where there's a mine or a hole in the ground.
That's where I'm heading for that's where I'm bound
So follow me down Cousin Jack

Welcome Dave
There is a active mine exploration community down your way, maybe my good friend 'the other Roy' would like to post on this

They are not only underground but but interested in all other aspects of mining/mining history as well.
My avatar is a poor likeness.

Thanks folks! It is a lovely place to live indeed, it's just well out of the way if you ever need to go up country. On the plus side, the fact that we are effectively the back end of nowhere down here means the area mostly has a wonderful rural feel to it; that's particularly special round here where I can walk for 10 minutes and be in a countryside that is steeped in industrial history! :-)

Roy, I'd actually be quite interested in exploring the mines around here underground as well; I may not be Cornish but I do find the idea rather intriguing. However, I'm a total newcomer in that regard! What sort of clubs/societies do this sort of thing? I guess the kit required depends on the individual trip? The only press old mine workings usually get round here is the sort that say "don't even think about going near them - they are categorically dangerous".

Hi Dave, I'm another one living on Dolcoath Mine (Laity Fields) and I believe there is at least one more here that does as well!

Welcome Aboard.

Hi Knocker, you're not far at all from me then! I'm in Pengegon, near the playing field. I think the site where my block was built used to be an old rope works, according to a copy of an ancient OS map that my father-in-law was given on a local mines walk with Bob Acton a few years ago. Hopefully, that might mean there isn't a shaft under my house...

Speaking of the old Rope works I think it was the one run by John H Davey, who also supplied other materials to the local mines.
Have a look at this for a heads up.

Roy! Are you trying to give him a heart attack? By the way your house is built on an old asbestos factory!

You wouldn't be Dave C who plays the guitar and who I met walking with my son the other day after you were exploring the great flat lode?
If you are I can lend you my Dolcoath book by Allen Buckley, I am sure you will find it interesting...(You know who I am!)
Is it safe to come out of the bunker yet?

Yep that's me, Dolcoathguy! Even the internet's a small world, isn't it? ;)

That invoice is rather fascinating, Roy. I reckon that probably is the same ropeworks, as we're at the Stray Park end of town. Asbestos, eh...
