Hi
I'm new to this site and I'm hoping I can get some info from the archives regarding gypsum miners working and living in Netherfield in the 1890s to at least 1920. I'm looking for details of my great grandfather who worked at lived there.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Carol2, welcome to the site. Might be worth you adding a few extra details; is there a specific mine or just a region? And your grandfather's name. No guarantee, but I'm sure if somebody can help they will.
my orders are to sit here and watch the world go by

My great grandfathers name was John Mitchell, he had 3 children by his first wife Mary who unfortunately died age 29. He remarried and was still living in Netherfield as a Gypsum Miner in the 1911 census. I would imagine he worked in the Mountfield Mine at this time as he lived in the miners cottages.

I think there have only ever been two gypsum mines in Sussex, and Brightling didn't open until the 1960s, so it will be Mountfield we are talking about.
