New to the site and after any information about the old mine workings around Llanfrothen, Rhyd and Penrhyndeudraeth area North Wales. I grew up there back in the 50/60s and used to explore the area around the mines known as Bwlch Y Plwm and Corn Pigyn, Pant y Wrach and wanted to know more about the history of the mines. I remember the old chimney stack known to us kids at the time as Corn Pigyn and were told by our parents to keep well clear of the place because of the dangerous open shafts. Nostalgia I suppose so any information or pics would be wonderful. Thanks

Try looking at the search using advanced Search

Leave the mine name blank
Set country to United Kingdom
Set the drop-down that appears when UK chosen as OS sheet SH
Set mineral as slate
Now click the button Show as Map (Google)
Zoom/move the map to Penrhyndeudraeth etc etc

One issue is that various sites have more than one name, so take a look on map view. I'm not a huge fan of Google maps outside of large towns, but it should work. Stay on this site/forum too, as quite a few of the members are from that area and will know far better than me.

Bwlch y Plwm and Pant y Wrach are metal mines, so a search for slate quarries won't pick them up. If following Tom's instructions it would be better not to select a mineral so that you can home in on both slate and lead/copper workings.

If you have any old photos of the mines, please feel free to upload them. Note that each mine has a dedicated album for historic photos.

The Corn Pigyn engine house housed the winding engine for Ross's shaft of Catherine and Jane Consols. This was also used as a pumping shaft for the mine, the pump being operated by flat rods through a level from Bigland's water wheel lower down the hill. The book The Old Copper Mines of Snowdonia that Mike mentions above has information on the mines and includes a sketch of the surface features at Catherine and Jane Consols. There are underground plans of Bwlch y Plwm and Pant y Wrach in the mining document library on this website.

Thank you Dave for the information you have supplied found it very helpful and in the process of investigating. Will be looking for some reading material about the history of the various workings around Penrhyn and Llanfrothen.
